Re: Ordain Women
I have thoughts and speculations. They may not be correct, but this is how I resolve my cognitive dissonance right now, so I figured I'd share. I'm approaching this from the believing perspective: I'm assuming that the current situation is not simply based on the prejudice of male church leaders, bu...

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
Yeah, using fractions would actually be more accurate than using my highly truncated decimals, but as we're both rounding either way, let's just say that ~300 is the right ballpark.

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
If you want to allow having 5 Tchaikovskies in a row, you'd add (⅙)^5, which adds 0.000128600823045, not appreciably changing the odds in any significant way.

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
But S.A.M, that's the probability of getting 4 Tchaikovksy and then 1 non-Tchaikovsky, in that order. Surely allowing order switching changes things up, right? (In the following example, "T" means a Tchaikovsky, and "N" means not) TTTTN = 1/6 * 1/6 * 1/6 * 1/6 * 5/6 = .0006 TTTNT...

Re: The Business of Being Born - #76297
It seems to me that hospitals are, due to the litigious environment today, very risk averse. This means taking precautions that may not really be warranted, just because of a remote possibility of something going wrong that could lead to a lawsuit. For example, with Dragon Baby, the hospital said sh...

Re: 76017 Frozen
[shrug] It doesn't matter to me too much who writes the words. It's how I interpret them (and how others interpret them) that matters. I would also add that "Conceal, Don't Feel" was clearly not the best approach to take with Elsa; it caused a lot of the fear and anxiety that led to the pr...

Re: 76017 Frozen
As with most creative works, the viewer's perception of the message depends greatly upon their own experiences and context. (As someone else once said, "Many of the truths we cling to depend greatly upon our own point of view.") LDS viewers will emphasize the points that resonate with thei...
Re: code
Two things. 1) The code for many of their projects is actually available: https://tech.lds.org/projects . However, for at least some of these projects, the code there is quite out of date. I thought I might start contributing to one of them a while back, and it turns out that managing contributors a...

Re: In the news
Wait, redheads are supposedly less attractive (according to that article, anyway)?
Huh. Turns out, most of the girls I dated (or seriously pursued) at BYU had red hair. I didn't realize it at the time, but there seems to be a pattern. I guess I'm an outlier?

Nope, sorry. Pretty sure that makes you 100% pure evil. The guy on Facebook said so.

Re: Too Many Mormons
So, do you think that Mormons (or active Mormons) are, as a group, better than any other group of people? I'm torn between two responses here. On the one hand, I'm not even sure it's possible to define what it means for one person to be "better" than another person. Are active Mormons mor...

Re: Answers I liked
I was actually really pleased to see the announcement about writer applications go up. It used to be that the Board was asked how to apply often, and they would answer often. Then writers got tired of answering it so frequently, so the answer became "Look, we just answered that a month ago. Cou...

Re: Smart phone recommendations
Also, the new 5S has a fingerprint reader to use for your password! Some Androids have that, true, but so far as I know (and what Yellow told me recently), iPhone is the only one that is completely secure. I'm actually super excited for February when I'm available for an upgrade, specifically for t...

Yes, that's the same issue that's affecting us. As you can imagine, the Board isn't on the top of OIT's priority list at the moment.

Re: The announcement
We found someone who is willing to host the Board for us. I'm not entirely sure at this point whether the arrangement is intended to be a public and formal one or not. That is, there are two possibilities. They could be officially sponsoring us, meaning we'd link to them and say nice things about th...

Re: The announcement
I can't promise anything as I don't believe everything has been finalized, but I'll say that as things currently stand, there is a very good chance that the Board will indeed be around in 100 hours.
