Re: How Long Have You Read The Board? (Poll)

NerdGirl that's when I started reading, too! Freshman year was 2000-2001 for me, and I found out about the Board from my sister who already was going to BYU. I've been reading on and off ever since.

Re: Heights of SO

It seems more cultural to me than biological. I've found the trait to be far more present in girls with a strong religious upbringing than those without; I think teaching that men have a role to protect women would lead to women seeking out men that represent that protection, physically. I don't th...

Re: Heights of SO

Most guys I dated were my height or just a bit taller, but I'm 5'8". I can think of a couple dates with shorter guys, and a couple dates with guys who were over 6' but it seems like most guys were in that 5'10"-ish area. My husband included. But even though he's taller than I am, all his h...

Re: Do women rule in the home and in relationships? #74665

I don't have much to add, but I wanted to say that I appreciated your comment, Marduk. It reminded me of a book called Crucial Conversations that we read at one of my previous jobs, and it was all about how to work toward solutions when you disagree. And now I want to reread it. :) One of the things...

BUT, I will say that chastity lessons aren't nearly as frequent in family wards, in my experience. Frankly, if you had a good idea when a chastity lesson is coming up, I'd just go home early that day. I'm always happier when I let church meetings work for me instead of making myself a slave to them...

Re: Too Many Mormons

I know people tend to say the Church is the same everywhere you go, but that wasn't my experience. Church in inner-city Chicago looks very little like church in Utah. (I have examples if anyone is actually interested) But I don't know if I should attribute the difference to an overwhelming majority ...

wryness you'll have to tell us how it went with your students. I've seen a few things floating around the interwebs about the downsides of social media. Even a study that found a correlation with time spent on social media and depression. (which of course I can't find right now). Interesting stuff. ...

I've known people who pronounced it both ways, too. But everyone who went with the Gio's cousin pronunciation was constantly correcting people.
I also knew a Pa-tree-see-a, but she was from Mexico. And since I grew up in a very Hispanic neighborhood she only had to correct the white people.

Re: Should I Buy This Camera?

I think a lot of Black Friday ad previews show up the end of October/beginning of November. If you have a few stores you're interested in they may already have a place where you can sign up to get notified when their ad goes up. Walmart has one. So does Target I'd just google [whichever store name] ...

I'm reading Stiff, The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach. It's about all the different ways cadavers are used in medical (and other) research. It's surprisingly fascinating.

I have lots of thoughts, but they would be long and personal and ranty. Short version, I'm with you, Whistler. There's nothing revealed on this sort of thing, and that's great if that interpretation makes sense or brings comfort to the lady who wrote that post. But, I don't believe it. I think it di...

The paleta guy is like the ice cream man, but different. He has a little cart he'd push around with bells and he'd sell fudgesicle like popsicles. Only there were lots of flavors. I know it's not exactly "American" culture, but I thought it was slightly more widespread. Guess not! Also, if...

T1M, that's exactly what they called them. Not to mention "bomb pops!" Utahns, see if you can guess what those are. They might have Fla-vor-ice ... But is that really the same?? Also, I knew Dreyer's was Edy's. Not Eddie's ... Ee-dee, apparently. It doesn't even look like it should be pro...

Re: engagement length

I was engaged for just under 10 weeks, which is pretty short. We got married right before Christmas (on the last day of finals, actually) so there were some school related constraints that wouldn't apply here. My sister was engaged for 6 and a half months and felt like that was longer than necessary...

We called them freeze pops (or freeze-y pops) growing up. Which is apparently the midwestern word for them. I don't think I'd heard them called Otter pops until I came to Utah. ETA: And by Midwest, I meant Great Lakes. Because "midwest" out here means something different than it does in Ch...

I didn't vote (because I don't think I'd even hit double digits) but I know your name, bob (from your kickstarter, which was very cool) but not Marduk's. So, there you go.

Re: I Dreamed a Dream

Must have been a full moon or something last night because I had a weird dream, too. I was in my room and there was a stuffed animal-type frog thing trying to attack me. But it was actually a chupacabra. At least, that's what I kept telling my sister. She was right by me while this stuffed chupacabr...
