Re: LDS Handbook changes - SSM, Apostasy, and children
Just to chime in with what it's like in the early 30's/older millennals group, by far the biggest response I've seen is shock. Shocked and hurt, or shocked and confident it's all lies. ("That John Dehlin, he's like a mustachioed villain from Old timey movies. Can't trust him!") I'm not sur...

Re: Rant of the Day
Here are some free things in the Chicagoland area. I did some poking around to make sure they were still free, since I moved away back in 2000. You'll have to go through some rougher areas to get to some of these places, but that's true if you go too far in any direction from U of C. Free stuff: Lin...

Re: Rant of the Day
Ugh. I. hate. Chicago. I never ever ever ever want to live here again. The teaching job market sucks, the bureaucracy is worse, the city is way in debt, which means taxes just keep going up. As a teacher with 5 years experience including time teaching AP Calculus where I raised the AP pass rate by ...

Re: Is This Normal?
Thanks bob and Zed. What you're describing is more what I was expecting. It's good to know there are therapists that have a different style. And, lol Portia, no she wasn't with LDS Family Services. Well, maybe she does therapy with them on the side, but I met her at a therapy practice place. From wh...

Is This Normal?
I haven't been around for awhile but I thought you guys might have some good insights on this. So I just saw a therapist for the first time because of some issues with postpartum depression and anxiety. And it wasn't really what I was hoping for. What I wanted was someone who would listen to how I w...

*sneaks out of boardboard hiatus*
Tthe answers from this reunion tour are excellent. I've really appreciated it. Katya's answer on trials, all TBS' answers that basically give people permission to take care of themselves. Good stuff all around.

We filled out brackets for our family night activity tonight. My 5 year old has BYU beating Villanova for the championship, by a score of 9-8. Based on absolutely nothing, I have Creighton winning it all.

Ah, vorpal. You and me, I just don't think we'll ever agree on anything.
ETA: Sorry, I don't mean to hijack the thread. It's neither news nor relevant that I am on the opposite end of the spectrum from vorpal on most issues.

Re: Ordain Women
What concerns me most is the attitude that we see things more clearly than others and therefore have a right to lecture the General Authorities on what they have an obligation to speak about and to reveal. I'm not sure what exactly this is in reference to (and honestly don't care to know) but I thi...

Re: Ordain Women
I, too, prefer to hear my doctrine from prophets. We have them. They have regular opportunities to speak to us. I think it would go a long way to hear one of the First Presidency address the issue. No matter the answer there would be some people who would be unhappy with it. But I'm not sure why the...

Re: Ordain Women
I still believe that the historical position is one that supports the fact that women don't need to be ordained to priesthood offices. I wonder about this, mostly based on my background. From a logistics perspective, it would have been much easier if women could have officiated in priesthood office...

Re: Ordain Women
Ooh, was this the controversial question? :) I loved this part of Stego Lily's answer: Whether or not women should be ordained to the Priesthood is completely in God's hands, but it's something that we as a Church should absolutely be asking about. Sometimes I think we Mormons forget our (non-pionee...

Also, also! The new cookie dough Oreos are not the delicious experience you might expect and taste like things that are coffee flavored. Clearly there's a hidden coffee agenda in our wholesome, 'Merican Oreos. Think of the children!
(seriously, though, they are disappointingly not tasty)

Re: Surrogacy
I don't know anything about the Romney kids' situation, and tend to doubt this would be true of them specifically (given Mitt Romney's list of church callings), but I wonder how many general church members are unaware the Church had any position on these types of things. So they use their own person...

Re: Surrogacy
E.g., we were very anti-birth control throughout much of the 20th century, but now that's more or less officially gone (although it may be around culturally, in some circles). I think anti-vasectomy positions are still officially on the books, though. Anti-"surgical sterilization" stateme...

Thanks Tally. I think I was getting confused with being considered a dependent for income taxes. It's funny that there isn't a standard definition for determining dependency for federal government purposes.

I thought you were on your own for financial aid as long as your parents didn't provide at least half your financial support for the year (regardless of age). Is it different now? It's been a very long time since I've filled out a FAFSA... Although I suppose if you've lived at your parents' house, e...

Re: The Business of Being Born - #76297
I don't mean to be disagreeable, but my experiences don't back up (what I think is) your position at all. I thought I had been educated on birth. I'd read a lot of things about "trusting your body" and "trusting the process" of birth, etc. I was completely at the mercy of the inf...

Re: The Business of Being Born - #76297
But yes, I do think that ideally every pregnant woman should have a basic understanding of what labor is and what some major red flags are. No, I don't expect them to know everything, but I do expect that women should know the basics and be willing to stand up to the professionals if something does...
