Re: Homebirth

I saw this satire page today - http://utahmidwives.weebly.com/. I think it perfectly illustrates the problem with Utah's voluntary licensure for midwifery laws.

Re: Homebirth

I hope they don't hear "I think you're a bad mom." I don't think they're bad moms. I think they're moms who care greatly about their children. I think, like you, they hear they advantages of it, and don't realize how serious and how common the disadvantages of it are. That's what I was try...

I just wrote a blog post about this on my personal blog - 10 Reasons I'd never ever ever have a home birth.

Goodbye, anonymity!

Re: #74149 car seat

I literally laughed out loud in complete horror at the idea that people would miss their cell phone more than their own child. It's like this disturbing combination of schadenfreude and just, WHAT?! I actually just read an article about this recently - http://www.parenting.com/.../tragedy-in-the-ba...

To respond to all your points in turn: 2. Your second point first, since it effects the rest of the answer - Yes, the Canadian and US systems are very different and results and techniques in one country can't be extrapolated to apply to the other country. I should have said that in my post. 1. So, g...

Re: #77484 Breastfeeding Benefits

...from what I've seen a standard epidural doesn't make much of a difference one you get to the actual pushing stage. I've had two labors - one with an epidural, one without - and in my experience, the epidural made a world of a difference once I got to the pushing stage. It's pretty impossible to ...

I agree. Maven's been doing a great job. There have been so many pregnancy/new mom questions lately!

Homebirth

Let's propose a hypothetical situation. Say that you were sending your child to school one day, and you somehow learned that there was going to be a crazy shooter on campus, and if you sent your child to school that day they had a 1/1000 chance of dying. Would you send them to school? Hell no. Why n...

#77541 - I really liked Anne's answer. I sincerely hope that the single mom does report those who are discriminating against her.

Re: #77484 Breastfeeding Benefits

Yeah, I have two girls. :) (They're adorable, by the way.) One born with an epidural, one medication-free. One breastfed, one formula-fed. And if anyone had to guess which was which, there's no way they'd be able to tell, because there's just no difference. I'm not an OB, although I'm flattered you'...

Re: #77484 Breastfeeding Benefits

Yeah, I don't get it either. And I actually think I have a pretty high pain tolerance; I have a chronic condition that occasionally causes an allergic reaction that feels identical to descriptions of heart attacks. And those last for hours, and I endure through them. There's nothing I can take to ma...

#77484 Breastfeeding Benefits

As Maven said in her answer, most websites you're going to look for this information are going to be biased one way or the other (usually very pro-breastfeeding). And it's important to look at the studies themselves - many that show huge benefits to breastfeeding don't fully account for confounding ...

Re: The Business of Being Born - #76297

I'm sorry to drudge up such an old thread, but I saw this today and had to post it here. The Journal of Midwifery and Women’s Health just published a paper called "Formulating Evidence-Based Guidelines for Certified Nurse-Midwives and Certified Midwives Attending Home Births." In this pape...

I think he's saying it's cynical because it sounds like living parallel lives is the best you can achieve, rather than being interdependent with each other.

Re: The Business of Being Born - #76297

I feel awful for that mom, but I also put some of the blame on her (assuming she wasn't pressured into her choices by the midwife in a verbal abuse situation) because a midwife (or doctor) should not be the sole decision maker for labor. The mother should also be educated and making decisions. Woah...

Re: The Business of Being Born - #76297

A tragic example how the lack of education of homebirth midwives hurts families: Jan Tritten, the editor-in-chief of "Midwifery Today" (the "journal" of homebirth midwives) is responsible for the death of a baby at a homebirth today. Yesterday she posted on Facebook (Facebook! Be...

Marduk wrote:So wait, pillowy, is your position that birth with epidural is equally as hard as birth without? Because that seems odd to me.
Not saying they're equally as hard, just that neither one is better or worse. (Same as thatonemom and DL just said.)

Re: Labor Positions

But see, even in that analogy you equated labor without pain relief=medal worthy, labor with pain relief=not medal worthy. Is there not judgement there? Of putting one above the other? Both women accomplished the same thing. They carried a baby in pregnancy and they delivered the baby. One chose pai...
