Re: Being called contentious

I think it just comes down to social awareness: When you start to perceive that the other person is becoming heated or uncomfortable, if you really don't want to be labeled contentious, you have to either back down or change the subject. Marduk, I'm guessing that sometimes you might prioritize accur...

Dark and Twisty: 60605

Upon seeing the phrase "dark and twisty," my first thought was this. Mmm, dark and twisty.

Re: Microwave Buttons

I know a lot of facts about nutrition but I don't have a lot of time to find sources for all of these. Will you guys hate me forever if I just tell you things I know (that I've learned in BYU nutrition classes and read in actual textbooks)? 1. "Killing nutrients" is a little ambiguous. It ...

Re: Microwave Buttons

DL: Microwaves can destroy nutrients, but it's the heat that does it, not anything specific to the microwaves themselves. In fact, microwaving is usually recommended over other cooking methods, as far as vitamin retention goes, because with a microwave's shorter cooking times, the vitamins are actua...

Re: Random Maids a'Milking!

Oh my gosh. I discovered Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality this summer, and have been a faithful reader ever since. It's the only fan fiction (longer than a few thousand words, anyway) I've ever read, and I love love love it.

What. I cannot imagine being so annoyed by anything that I would go through all that effort to not even solve the actual problem. Ridiculous.

Re: Saving for your kids' education

My opinion on the matter is pretty similar to Imogen's. My parents have always been willing to support my siblings and me in young adulthood, as long as we're either going to school or working full-time. Their commitment to support us through our education and to establish generous college/grad scho...

Re: tithing

I keep a very detailed spreadsheet of all of my income because I am compulsive but I only pay tithing like once or twice a year because I am also lazy. I guess I can't really imagine God getting annoyed and withholding blessings because of that. I think it would only be a problem if you ever didn't ...

Dragon Lady, when you're not quoting someone verbatim, you probably shouldn't describe a conversation as "actual." It's very misleading and you should probably try to put more thought into your word choices.

Some people, who have an investment opportunity that makes more money than paying interest on their mortgage costs, deliberately delay paying off their loans so they can keep that money invested somewhere more profitable. I don't know how common that is, but I have heard of it being done.

Re: Memorization Successes and Later Failures

You guys are nuts. I think I have like two scriptures permanently memorized, and aside from song lyrics, that's seriously it. I've "memorized" all the scripture masteries at one time or another, but things like that have always been a cram-and-regurgitate kind of deal. I'm impressed by peo...

Re: Daily random tidbit.

Did you know that lizards don't urinate? Their liquid waste is excreted along with their solid waste. Birds are uricotelic too! Most animals have to convert their nitrogen wastes into uric acid or urea to avoid toxic ammonia buildup, but fish are super awesome because they can just excrete ammonia ...

Re: #59833 Move to the center of the row, please!

I sit on the edge because at the end of class, I don't like to wait for other people to file out ahead of me. For such an extremely minor inconvenience, I don't think I need any better reason than that. The way I see it, if you like sitting on the aisle, you have to accept that people will be climbi...

Marduk, I think you might be referring to http://theboard.byu.edu/questions/58971/ . Having been a TA a number of times for classes that my friends were taking, I've had the administrative power to see their grades in the class. But even if you're curious, and even though knowing their grade on some...

When people give you advice (eg, get married!), you don't necessarily have to interpret it as, "Hey! You're wrong and bad. Do this instead!" I think what a lot of advice-givers really mean is, "This is something wonderful that I think will make you happy. And you're great and I want y...
