Re: Regretting an abortion
I was more referring to the idea that in LDS theology, abortion is a sin, and therefore something to repent of. A bishop is a facilitator of repentance. Ergo, the women who feel regret and want to repent would go to their bishop. Those who did not would either A) never go to the bishop in the first ...

Re: Regretting an abortion
I think people interpret "everything in their power" differently. For instance, I'd interpret "everything in my power" to mean that once something goes beyond reasonable bounds of what's my business, I should shut up and let people make their own decisions, because it's no longe...

Re: Regretting an abortion
Can you say confirmation bias? Holy cats. Also: nowhere in the hypothetical does it say the friend is Mormon. Also also: the church has no position on when life actually begins, despite many people within the church believing differently. Also also also: "everything in their power" is pret...

Can I just say how much I HATE the idea that one shouldn't develop "strong emotional attachments" outside of one's spouse? We need strong emotional attachments, and generally, more are better. I think LDS culture puts too much onto the role of a spouse, and it isn't healthy.

Uh, yeah, you pretty much did. Out of the 80 or so things on their menu, only two are more than $20. And the cheesecake is $8.

Re: wedding night horror...or just provo urban legends
I once had a roommate who argued that all sex ed classes lead to increased sexual activity and promiscuity. He said that people shouldn't be given that information until they are married. When I suggested that people would figure it out on their own, and do things that felt good, and if they didn't ...

Space isn't that interesting to me. It isn't like you're going anywhere. At best it is like going on safari, but with far fewer cool animals. I vote no (even without the 5% chance of death.)

I wonder if Chick-fil-A has lower expenses for beverages per combo meal-purchasing customer compared to other fast food restaurant chains like McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, etc. Chick-fil-A is the only one I've ever seen of fast food restaurants that offer free drink refills with the purchase o...

Well, if you want people to spend time with you, we're always up for it. Other than that, I can only say that I'm sorry, and I hope you find peace.

Before I get into larger issues, let me first say that I'm sorry for everything you're going through, I.E. Let me offer you as much love as will transmit over the internet. And if you ever want someone to talk to or take you to dinner or just hang out with, just say the word. I think H.'s categoriza...

Do you have any right to refuse? No, you don't. Bishops are in no way obligated to keep something between the two of you. Within the bounds of the handbook, he can consult with other leaders up the chain from himself, he can contact the man's bishop or anyone up the chain from him, and bishops in ca...

Call him paranoid if you like, but he's right. Unless you have reported a crime, there is nothing the police can really do for you, but a lot they can do TO you. It is quite easy to get in trouble by saying too much, even if you've done nothing wrong, and even in something as simple as a traffic stop.

Yeah, Digit, that's true for me. Of course, since I built my desktop, I actually had to shell out specifically for the OS, it wasn't part of the cost of the computer. Amazon informs me that it was $99.99.

Right. I have no problem with a competent doctor prescribing, say, marijuana as treatment for chronic pain or glaucoma (I don't know that there's significant research into using it for mood disorders.)
But yes, drinking alcohol, alone, when you're depressed, is a recipe for disaster.

Booze (moderate but frequent) and beauty sleep seem to work wonders. This message brought to you by the mid-1960s. I see no moral difference between benzos and alcohol, SSRIs and marijuana, frankly. And I've put a lot of thought into this question. The main difference I see is that two of these are...
