Re: Label Me Mormon

To clarify, although I said I am sort of a New Order Mormon, I feel like that implies non-believing. I wouldn't consider myself a non-believer. There is still a part of me deep down that hopes that the important parts of the gospel are true. I'm more agnostic than atheist. My lack of belief really h...

Re: Polygamy

So the proper response to someone who doubts a prophet's calling is to have them killed?

Re: Earth Age Trolls

Is there anyway the editors could create a troll thread over here or something. I am curious what sort of trollish questions are submitted.

Re: Polygamy

I know of some believing Mormons who, after learning more about JS, decide that they don't like him as a person. Some members may have a problem with this, but there is no reason someone can't have a testimony if Joseph's calling yet not like him as a person, just as someone can support and sustain ...

Re: Polygamy

I thought TBM was true blue mormon, or true believing mormon, or something, but I am really not sure what it stands for, but the idea is the same either way.

Re: Polygamy

I totally agree with you, FPM. Full disclosure here, I am sort of what you might call a New Order Mormon (NOM). I am not completely a non-believer, but I am not one of the True Blue Mormons (TBM) who know with every fiber of their being that the church is true. So if you are looking for someone who ...

Re: Polygamy

Joseph's relationship with Fanny Alger is definitely bothersome. Anyone, who is not being apologetic, who reads that story, I'm sure, would come to the conclusion that he most likely had an affair, and then claimed to be married after the fact in order to justify the act. I'm not saying that's what ...

Radiation levels

Question 62733 Democritus' answer was informative, and I don't have a problem with it, really. But he gives a lot of information in his answer, but someone looking for a simple answer, it can be hard to fish out from among all the technobabble. So I wanted to give my simple answer that would comple...

Re: Earth Age Trolls

I'm just a little surprised by that. I had always thought that it was practically doctrinal within the church that the earth is more than 6000 years old. I'm beginning to think that I come from a more liberal (wrt the church) than I thought.

Re: Answers I liked

No need to apologize. This is definitely not the first time my attempts at humor have offended people, and it probably won't be the last. Actually, now that I think about it, I think I actually offended you once before, several years ago. I think you (jokingly?) said you wanted to cry. For the recor...

Re: Answers I liked

Sorry, I was totally being jocular. The comment was really supposed to be praise. My lame attempt at humor didn't work out. As newcomer, I guess I am not well-known enough here for people to get my humor. I often catch myself before I post patently unfunny jokes like that, but every now and then the...

Re: Answers I liked

I wasn't too impressed. I'm sure if I were a board writer and a helpful person and really smart and had studied fluid dynamics I could write an answer like that too.

Re: Classics/Latin/Greek

Putting Latin and Greek next to Klingon at the very bottom of the list is just absurd. I was intentionally being absurd. Obviously learning Latin has more benefit than learning Klingon. However, some of the reasons that a person might choose to learn Latin could also be applied to learning Klingon....

Re: Classics/Latin/Greek

But just like I don't need to know Greek or Hebrew or reformed Egyptian to read and get stuff out of the scriptures, one doesn't need to know Latin to benefit from reading classic literature or studying classical civilization. Sure, knowing Hebrew can enhance one's scripture-reading experience, and...

Re: Classics/Latin/Greek

I just feel like, if I tried, I could list dozens of subjects that would be more valuable for both the individual and society if everyone studied them. How are you defining "more valuable for both the individual and society"? By more valuable for the individual, I mean that by learning th...

Re: Classics/Latin/Greek

I would just like to mention that I am totally in favor of studying the classics, if I am understanding what that term means. I think people should study classical literature, philosophy, art, etc. My point was specifically with regards to learning the languages (Latin/Ancient Greek). Obviously, som...
