Re: 73862 - When folks' choices make you sad

Do you think parents/families who have a child go astray don't suffer deeply, often in silence because it's a social taboo/painful to tell people about a child's poor/dangerous choices? I noticed that you put the word "astray" in quotation marks later on in this conversation, so I don't w...

Re: 73862 - When folks' choices make you sad

Also, Rifka, I'd be interested in your opinion on the direction of causality. In those I know, 100% of the time, the loss of belief came first, and did not perforce lead to any one lifestyle. I haven't had the chance to talk openly with enough people who have stopped believing to be able to say for...

Re: 73862 - When folks' choices make you sad

Thanks for clarifying, Portia. I think I misunderstood what you were driving at before. I also admit that I didn't actually go to the talk link you posted before and I assumed it read slightly than it did. I still don't think he intended it to sound like the child was dead to the parents, but I can ...

Re: 73862 - When folks' choices make you sad

I think it's actually very insulting to assume that just because someone has a hard experience that doesn't involve death or break-ups, they can't be grieving over it, Portia. Everyone grieves differently, and for different reasons. Assuming that just because someone grieves differently than you mea...

Re: Answers I liked

I've only tried BYU-affiliated ones. Not to paint them with a broad brush (I was glad they honored confidentiality, and I LOVED that freaking biofeedback lab), but I just never had a great experience. I hear you. I tried the BYU counseling center 3 times (with 3 different counselors) and never stuc...

Re: Service and kids

Making cookies or putting together fruit baskets and doorbell ditching them. The kids will love getting to help make/put them together, and the excitement of trying not to be caught (be careful to stay close to the kids when doorbell-ditching, though-- otherwise they might not understand and might c...

Re: British Costume Dramas #73667

I love North & South and Wives & Daughters! I also second the recommendations for The Importance of Being Earnest, Downton Abbey I'm not as familiar with British TV, but for movies, I'd also recommend -Amazing Grace (starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Ioan Gruffud)-- it's currently my favorit...

Re: for women's eyes only

I actually the questioner about bra sizes was very tactful-- it made me think of Question #66214 , which was a lot more " mennreadingaboutperiodsisthemosthorriblethingintheworld!!!" overkill (and I loved Rating Pending's response to it!) I think it's silly to insist men not reading somethi...

Re: Autism-Spectrum Quotient

I got an 18. Ditto Katya on loving libraries and patterns. Also, the questions were vague. What kind of theater (and what's playing) and what kind of museum? That would make a big difference as to which answer I would mark.

Passwords

In question #73218 , Laser Jock recommended using a password safe program. I tried one before (called 1Password), but every time I updated my browser (Firefox), the program stopped working. It got so frustrating that I stopped using it after just a couple of days. Has anyone else had that problem? I...

Re: What's It Like Not At BYU?

Katya, I noticed the same thing about student workers. Is BYU saving money by hiring students? Are adult workers more likely to stay long term in a job, since students have higher turnover? I can see reasons for both having student workers and non-student workers, but I took it for granted that mos...

Re: library chat and anonymity

I was/am. I worked at one of the reference desks for several years, and answering chats was among our desk attendant responsibilities. I don't know who Snozberry Swirl is, though. We mostly kept to our own section. That was a few years ago, but I do volunteer at the library now and I get to answer c...

Re: counseling and antidepressants

I've also heard that statistic, but I wonder if it's because Utahns are less-likely to self-medicate with alcohol, drugs, etc. I have no foundation for this theory-- it's just a guess, but it would make sense to me, since such a large percentage of Utah's population are Mormon and therefore abstain ...

Re: counseling and antidepressants

I just wanted to say that antidepressants DO treat the root cause of depression, if your root cause is chemical imbalance. Otherwise, it just helps regulate the chemicals in your brain and takes the edge off of whatever is going on. Antidepressants just don't cure anything. Amen! I think too many p...

Ditto on David Burns. When Panic attacks is also really good for anxiety. Ditto the advice for counseling (and medicine if necessary), too. Counseling and medicine have made a huge difference for me.

Re: library chat and anonymity

No, the librarians can't see who is chatting. The chat box just pops up with a random user ID number (different for each chat-- multiple questions from the same user are not connected to each other as far as I know). So, your identity is safe!
