Re: Answers I liked
http://theboard.byu.edu/questions/87490/ There are always more girls that go to EFY than guys, which meant that a substantial percentage of the guys had to walk around with a girl on each arm, which I always thought made them look like a pimp. (Or a polygamist! Either way, not the image we want to a...

Today in random medication side effects: My hair hurts.
(Not really, but my scalp is so tender that it hurt to comb my hair this morning. Numbness/tenderness is a known side effect of the new medication I'm on and it'll go away in a few hours, but it's still frustrating.)

Re: #87440 - Collective nouns
Are Chinese measure words similar in that you need to know the Right one for the thing you're talking about. If I remember correctly, ge is pretty commonly used, but many classes of things have a Right measure word that should be used. They might be similar in the sense that there are some that are...

#87440 - Collective nouns
http://theboard.byu.edu/questions/87440/ I don't have a bone to pick with the asker or answerer of this particular question, but collective nouns are a huge pet peeve of mine, from a linguistics perspective. They play into the idea that in order to "properly" speak a language, you have to ...

#87448 - Seven deadly sins
https://theboard.byu.edu/questions/87448/ I think that equating gluttony with obesity is misguided (if not straight up fat shaming). Modern obesity has less to do with pridefully eating too much food and more to do with modern lifestyle constraints and processed foods (which are often much cheaper t...

"Spam" has one of my favorite etymologies of all time, because of the Monty Python connection.

I'm guessing the Church hit a membership milestone? Nope, it was really more mentioned than announced (if you want to be technical) but it was on the day I was born, and it is how the majority of my ward found out my mom had had her baby. Are you the descendant of a GA (or someone else who was spea...

I'm coming to realize that this applies in a lot of areas. (Basically, congratulating yourself on what a great person you are—coming from any political background—doesn't make you a great person.)TheBlackSheep wrote:It is interesting, though, to reflect on how politics does not necessarily create great allies.

Re: Rant of the Day
Today it turns out a major opportunity I've been planning on for months now, something that would affect my career and entire life, isn't going to happen after all. I worked hard and didn't sell myself short, and that's all I could have done, I guess. Personally, I think you would have been amazing...

I recently started using YNAB (You Need a Budget) and I really like it. It's got a bit of a learning curve and it's not free, but I think it's well worth $5 a month and it's doing a good job of motivating me to save more than I have in the past.

Re: Rant of the Day
Maybe it's an accidental extrapolation of their own experiences. Like, they didn't understand Heavenly Father's love as much until they became a mother, so they assume no one else does. Yeah, but that's a pretty big extrapolation. And I don't think it would exist without cultural support. (I.e., if...

1) I might not throw it away if I haven't had much sugar lately.Marduk wrote:Katya, if you're just going to throw the gift away, why does it matter what it is?
2) It's the thought that counts? And I think that chocolate is an inherently better gift, under the circumstances.

Re: Mother's Day
1. I can't have sugar very often because it gives me migraines, but I'd still rather be given a cookie or a chocolate bar than a flower or pamphlet*, even if I end up throwing the cookie/chocolate bar away. *This actually happened, once. 2. The wards I've attended have given gifts to all adult women...
