Re: uppgivenhetssyndrom (giving up on life syndrome

I think the key is to remember that our bodies and minds can heal and life can change.

If you want a good podcast about how much our brains and thoughts are influenced by various hormones, last week This American Life rebroadcasted episode #220 Testosterone and it was pretty excellent.

Re: uppgivenhetssyndrom (giving up on life syndrome

The podcast Freakonomics: The Suicide Paradox also demonstrates how different cultures may affect mental health. This is one man's theory: If your quality of life if poor, and it may be you’re unemployed, you’re an oppressed minority, whatever it might be, there’s a civil war going on, you know why ...

Dating with Guns

BQ 89288 If you are someone who loves guns and is starting to get to know someone, perhaps one of your first few dates should be to a shooting range. Not only does showing someone a good shooting stance help break the touch barrier, but it can also help you find out what the other person thinks abo...

Re: Stuff we're reading / watching / listening to

I'm currently hooked on The Magicians! Caution though, it does contain some pretty heavy topics including drug abuse, mental illness, rape, and more but I feel it handles them in a very appropriate way. Also, about a year ago I asked The Board for podcast recommendations and This American Life was s...

This red pill guy is really irritating me. I hope one of the writers uses this to answer one of his future questions.

Regarding BQ 85059 , the easiest time to rob people in Provo (or Rexburg) would be on Sunday during church. I'm not sure I want to reveal the method that I think would work best for not getting caught, but either way, once you're inside there's probably 4-6 laptops, a TV, a whole bunch of movies, so...

Re: Polygamy today

I agree. I've told my husband that if we were told that he needed to take a second wife, we are going to say no. Besides, the church has made it clear time and time again that they stay out of the bedroom, so if they suddenly told my husband that he would have to be open to possibly being physically...

Re: Women in STEM

I graduated in mechanical engineering and am female, so I've definitely been the lone woman in many of my classes. One of our early class requirements was to sit in on two 200, 300, and 400 level class periods so we could get a better idea of what lies ahead. One of my 300 level class periods was ta...

I asked. Their initial reply was, "Oh, they didn't tell you?" and with that one sentence I knew that not only did I not get the promotion, but they forgot me. The second part hurts worse. I really wish I would have asked sooner.

Re: Rant of the Day

I was interviewed for a promotion at work over a month ago. They told me it would be a while before they got back to me ("after the new year") and they still haven't. Is it ok to ask how their decision making process is going? I really want to know because if I get the promotion, we'll sta...

The last time Christmas was on Sunday, for the bulk of the meeting, I think we had someone share a thought or two about Jesus, maybe read from Luke, then we'd sing a song or two. Rinse and repeat until the end of the meting.

Re: lovebirds' passwords

I know some of my husband's passwords and he knows some of mine. It's just for convenience, nothing quite so dramatic as destroying our individual selves. :P That's what my wife and I have done. We started giving each other passwords whenever it was more convenient than keeping them a secret. Same ...

Re: BYU-I in the news for an embarrassing reason again

At least this isn't as bad as the skinny jeans fiasco... Also, why is it, when I'm driving to work, if someone is tailgating me, speeding, or weaving in and out of cars, they either have no campus parking pass, or a faculty campus parking pass? Somehow my coworkers are wondering why I don't want to ...

Color me a skeptic, but I wonder ulterior motive, if any, he has. Shortly after the election, there was a short article that reported that McMullin had met with Orrin Hatch in Washington and Hatch was planning on having this be his last term as a US Senator given his age. If anything, McMullin now ...

If you don't take the Bible literally, you don't have to worry about where Adam's rib went, how all the animals got on the ark (and off!), how people lived to be hundreds of years old, how the earth was made in 6 days, or where Neanderthals fit into the world. Letting go of the Bible being literall...

If you happen to live in a city where major political protests are taking place, please don't go. Half of them are closer to riots than protests and someone is going to get hurt or killed from one of them. They are too emotionally charged with anger, fear, and hatred for them all to end peacefully. ...
