Re: Duelling/Fencing Culture
I think it's a fun idea, but I say limit it to a period or two. I know my kids would use it as an excuse to sidetrack the lesson.

I still have a baby tooth!
Of course, there's no permanent tooth that goes along with it, so hopefully I keep it a long time.

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
Aaaaand I found the a few that hate me. As of the day they got their essay tests back. Well kids, if you didn't answer main question that was in the prompt, you're going to get a bad grade.

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
I get it, and she mostly seemed to just be enjoying my . . . unusual phraseology. But it does make me a bit paranoid--I feel like in hyper-conservative Utah, just about anything could get me in big trouble. At the same time, it was a bit flattering. I poked around a few of the kids' feeds and found ...

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
Today I learned that sometimes students live-tweet what happens in class. One girl mentioned that she'd tweeted several of my quotes already, and so I went and looked her up later. Luckily she didn't mention me calling satyrs "horny little goat-men." I guess I'd better watch what I say! Ex...

Re: In the news
My sub plans today were not enough to take up the whole class period today, and I know the regular teacher is fine with me making it up as I go, a bit. So today, after we discussed what "pastoral" means and read The Passionate Shepherd to his Love and The Nymph's Reply, I had the honors 11...

Hugh Laurie's in that, too! (Briefly, but he's still there and funny.)Digit wrote:Very good one I haven't seen Sense and Sensibility.UffishThought wrote:Hugh Laurie: Bertie Wooster vs Gregory House.

Re: living with extroverts
Remember that his over-friendliness is just as much a social handicap as your discomfort in groups. I do a lot better when I feel the people that intimidate/annoy me are acting out of awkwardness instead of malice. I can relate to that better, and forgive it more easily.

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
Someone created an AppleID with MY email address. When I got the notification, I went and reset the password, so I could delete it, but there was no "delete account" option that I could find, and while doing it I inadvertently verified the email address. So now the creator and I are havin...

Re: #75554 - guys' legs
Oh, man. I had an awful plane ride last year where the guy next to me (who was very large) rested his hand on my thigh. And when I turned to look at him and see what was going on said "oh, can I put my hand here?" "No." "No?!" "No." "Okay..." And the...

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
Maybe, but this teacher IS absentminded and tangenty and inconsistant. All the classes have been telling me that, even when there's nothign to be gained. I can also tell it from her conversations with me. Though I'm sure they're trying to get away with stuff because I'm a sub, I'm also pretty sure t...

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
Here is the update! The teacher claims that's not something she'd put up with...but based on the way the students act and how shocked they are that they didn't get full credit, she may not be evaluating herself accurately. Anyway--she says I can give 10 extra points to students who redo the assignme...

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
Boring teaching rant, but if you want to validate me, I'd appreciate it. :) I'm currently a long-term English sub. The real teacher asked me to collect study guide she gave them at the beginning of the Macbeth unit. I don't think she looked over it before she assigned it, though--some questions refe...

Re: Christmas traditions
This tradition started just a few years ago, with most of the kids in high school or older, but my Dad's been creating scavenger hunts that lead to whatever our biggest and most impressive present is. They're usually 1-or-2 line riddles or lame jokes or memories that lead to the next location and cl...
