Re: Neighbor dilemma
At least in the state we live, if someone is using a rented property to commit illegal acts (like smoking pot), or if their behavior disturbs their neighbors' "peaceful enjoyment" of their rental (with the loud noise and smoking), the landlord can terminate the lease (or send a warning) at...

Linguistics-y question I almost asked
Q: Is there an official linguistics name for words with two similar-sounding parts, like wishy-washy, namby-pamby, dilly-dally, or fuddy-duddy? Some of the ones I can think of rhyme and some have a vowel change. A: "The repeating of parts of words to make new forms is called reduplication."

Interesting the language they use to try to say that some people are in-between In truth, because we all get one COMT gene from our father and one from our mother, about half of all people inherit one of each gene variation, so they have a mix of the enzymes and are somewhere in between the Warrior...

I don't know about good weather, but Amish country is still fun in the winter. And I'll second 42's suggestion of Great Wolf Lodge/Kalahari; those are really fun and you won't have to worry about the weather.

Re: Colored Pants et al.
The whole colored jeans trend has really not caught on in the (Midwestern) city where I live. I've heard about how they're such a hot trend everywhere else, and my sisters-in-law almost convinced me to buy a pair over Christmas, but...it's just not a thing here. Everyone wears skinnies, but even the...

It's so much nicer than hiring a nanny and so much easier than trying to fit chores, cooking a...

Re: talking about race - 70775
By the same token, "I think it's inappropriate for a stranger to talk about your race—ever." is, quite frankly, a load of crap. Why is it inappropriate? Is it inappropriate to talk about someone's gender? Their sexuality? Their religion? Race is an inseparable part of who we are, and thos...

Re: What's It Like Not At BYU?
Oh, I totally forgot the grounds. The landscaping at BYU is really, really good and I did not appreciate that before I saw the lazy gardening around here. And it's not like my school is so strapped for cash or anything; I think they just have unambitious plans for making the grounds look good, and t...

Re: What's It Like Not At BYU
Pros: Can wear gym shorts/yoga pants to class if I'm working out right after, without worrying whether I'll get a side-eye for being immodest. As a woman, I feel like I'm treated as a professional equal here as the default, whereas at BYU, I usually only got that treatment if I had already "pro...

My latest question. Thanks Eirene! I hope that waiting comment is something good. Also, I love astronomy so I'm really excited about that one (I'll check out the other one, too, but sometimes medical things makes me feel sick... ^_^'). I hope there are good comments too! I was sad that I could thin...

Re: "Wear Pants to Church Day"
Skirts and dresses = more formal than slacks. I think this really depends on the style of the piece of clothing in question. The dress pants I wear when I see patients are more dressy and formal than a good 1/3-1/2 of the skirts and dresses I wear to church. Dress pants will always be more formal t...

When you hold a piece of paper up to the mirror, you've already reversed it horizontally yourself by spinning it around (think about trying to read a piece of paper that you're holding up facing a lamp--you can also make it vertically flipped if that's the way you flip the paper over). The only thin...

Yeah, it took me a while to really understand what was going on in the book, but the story's long enough that it wasn't a huge problem. The weird thing for me was that I've totally tried to read a few others of Fforde's books, and I thought they were all terrible--I didn't even realize that it was t...

Re: Food commonalities
They've done a fair bit of research on food cravings (mostly in the context of pregnant women, but it applies regardless), and the general consensus is that cravings don't indicate specific nutritional deficiencies. The one possible exception is pica, an urge to eat non-food items like clay or dirt,...

This reminds me of something I read on this guy's blog : The very idea of a “moment” of ensoulment is one of those theological contrivances rejected by every folk culture that has ever existed, including ours. Intuitively, we all understand that the moral value of the fetus (like everything else abo...
