Re: Youth Activities in the Church
http://theboard.byu.edu/questions/78508/ For my part I wish the church wasn't so determined to keep the sexes separate as much as possible. H mentioned that combined activities would be suggested only to be shot down as the women didn't want to do "scout-like activities" but I guarantee t...

Re: #78595 - Salary of religion professors
When I was trained, we were specifically told that BYU could only discriminate on the basis of religious affiliation, so even if other types of discrimination might hold up in court, BYU doesn't appear to be operating under that mindset. Interesting. That makes sense, since litigation would be cost...

Re: #78595 - Salary of religion professors
I don't think a seminary or institute teacher would have a chance of proceeding with a discrimination case. A court would be extremely likely to consider them to be engaged in ministerial duties (i.e., advancing the religious teachings of the church), and this would cause the ministerial exception t...

Re: "hair did" and "bad grammar"
That is interesting, although the "febyooery" pronunciation is easily explained as an analogical extension of "January," where I'm not aware of any equivalent for "nuclear." Molecular? Cellular? If you think about it, lots of science-y words end with "ular," ...

He didn't clarify what he meant by that, and he's kind of an unstoppable force when he starts telling a story. So, I don't know what exactly he meant. I think this subject came up because he was telling us his views on some of the effects World War II had on culture, particularly in rural towns like...

Re: Answers I liked
My boss was a teenager in World War II. He says that before the war, breastfeeding in public was fairly common in the rural Utah town where he grew up. When the war ended, there were apparently some public service ads (on buses, for instance) saying that the men coming home from the war had been exp...

Re: The appearance of "evil"
Agreed! I would be really creeped out if a man suggested there was a reason he thought I should be watching him at all times, and then I'd start wondering about the child locks on the back door. I think that's a really terrible suggestion.

Re: The appearance of "evil"
I don't think these sorts of rules should be enforced widely. Rather, have the rule or guideline in place and then let people do as they will. Those who feel discomfort in a situation can use the rule as an excuse to get out of it. (I'm really sorry sir, there is a policy in the Handbook that says ...

Re: I Dreamed a Dream
Last night's dream was a special musical episode. I woke up in the middle of Professor Snape's catchy song "I'm a Duck (You're Another Duck)," which he was singing to Voldemort in an attempt to convince him to be less evil. I don't think it was working. (Despite what you might think from t...

homework for kindergarteners
I don't think kindergarteners should be assigned homework. But if you are going to assign homework to a kindergartener, it should be homework she can reasonably complete on her own. Last night I spent more than an hour helping a cute little kindergartener with a lot of unreasonable homework. She pro...

In summer, bats use forested areas for roosting, foraging, and raising young. Males generally stay within ten miles of the hibernaculum. Females, on the oth...

Re: mechanics charging women more?
When I was shopping for my car, a guy friend helped drive me to the different used car lots around town. The car salesmen mostly just talked to him, even though he repeatedly told them that I was the one buying the car. And they definitely looked at him before they quoted me a price. I'm convinced I...

Re: mechanics charging women more?
Yes! That is to say, if a woman indicates that she doesn't know the fair price of a repair, she will be charged, on average, a higher price than a man who indicates that he doesn't know the fair price. But if the woman demonstrates she's aware of the correct price, she actually gets more of a discou...

It looks like they both are based on the Latin root pugnare , meaning "to fight." According to an old book on synonyms I found on Google books, oppugn is considered a more forceful term than impugn: To oppugn is to exercise hostile reasoning against a person or his statements while impugn ...

I love the answers to #74630 (#AddAWordRuinAMovie). I don't know, though -- I think some of them actually make the movies sound better. Undead Poets Society sounds like it could be a big improvement on the original (and perfect for Halloween). Same with A Walk to Remember the Alamo . Raising Arizona...

return of a legally dead person (question from 2006)
A while back, I asked this question about what happens when someone who's been declared dead turns up again and wants his stuff back. The answer satisfied my curiosity, and I haven't really thought about it since then. But now my favorite legal humor blog reports that this issue came up recently in ...

adopted siblings marriage question
http://theboard.byu.edu/questions/74628/ Well, my internet search history is looking pretty weird now, but I wanted to check this one out, since I was under the impression that adopted siblings are generally treated like full siblings, including for incest laws. It looks like adopted siblings marria...
