Re: Calling all apostates!
I've been chewing over this question for a few days and I think I finally have something to contribute. For some background, I come from several generations of church members, did all the Mormony things growing up (primary, YW class presidencies, seminary, girls camp, etc.), was a temple worker for ...

Re: mission timing
I'm almost eighteen, I'm a guy, and I'm kind of caught between Luciana and Tally M. on this one. I think it's incredibly important for young men and women to learn what it's like to live on their own before serving a mission. For most people, I don't think it's a good idea to turn in papers and lea...

Life insurance doesn't function like what? As far as I know there's no COBRA equivalent for life insurance.

Re: #85685 - conservative parents
One of my favorite internet advice-givers is Captain Awkward , who has lots of good advice on how to set boundaries with parents in situations like this (full disclosure, the site uses lots of un-BYU language for those who are concerned about that). The gist of a lot of the advice is that once you'r...

Re: What's your favorite cheese?
Food is quite possibly one of my favorite things to talk about, especially pretentious foods like cheeses! I bought like four different kinds of cheese on my last grocery store run, though it's been a while since I've gotten a fancy cheese. I'm a huge fan of the more robustly flavored cheeses, like ...

Re: second wedding gift
Technically gifts are never required for any wedding, but I agree that this couple's wedding still deserves some kind of acknowledgment. Given the circumstances and the limited notice, I think your idea of a restaurant gift card is a lovely gesture.

Question for Zed or Nerd Girl (or other assorted Canadians)
I used Canada's new Cabinet under Trudeau as an example of descriptive political representation in class a couple days ago, and a few students asked me how successful that Cabinet has been. So, for those of you who are more knowledgeable about Canadian politics than I am, how are they doing? From wh...

Re: second wedding gift
By "second wedding" do you mean "both spouses have been in a marriage before," or "they had a small destination wedding and they're married already and now they want to throw a bigger party"?

Two of my grad school apps ... To schools in San Diego and Boulder ... Are complete! And thus I become a true Millennial. ;-) Portia! I used to live in San Diego but I don't anymore and I miss it terribly! So if you get admitted to the San Diego school I will tell you all about how you should live ...

Re: Fitbit?
I've been using a Fitbit One for almost a year (I got it through a fitness program my work was doing). It's fine, I guess? Usually I'm really motivated by tracking my physical activity and setting goals, but for some reason the Fitbit hasn't been working on me like I thought it would. I still wear i...

Yeah, what Zedability said. The change now is that even if the child's gay or lesbian parent gives their permission, the child cannot get baptized until they're 18.

I've been in a mild state of shock for the last two days since this policy came to light. Re: Wedding vows
Mico, I'm generally not one to be the center of attention (if my husband had been down for it I absolutely would have done the Mormon version of an elopement), so probably no vow renewal for me. I could get behind a private thing with just us and maybe a trusted officiant, but I'd feel bad asking fr...

Re: Wedding vows
I've attended two civil ceremonies conducted by LDS bishops and neither of them allowed the couple to say vows, they just stuck to the boilerplate that Frere Rubik outlined. This also seems like a good place to say that I'm roundly disappointed by the pre-fabricated and generic nature of LDS wedding...

Oh man, if I lived anywhere near Provo I would consider showing up at a party full of strangers just to eat that cake.
