Re: #80599 Alcohol 101

I found this to be a good guide for Mormons trying to navigate the bar scene: http://bycommonconsent.com/2008/08/19/how-to-not-drink-in-a-bar/ . The comments have a lot of good advice, too. And a bonus story! When I was in grad school I made my peace with the occasional outing to a bar because that'...

Re: Rant of the Day

Time for more Board Board pre-engagement angst! The process of getting my engagement ring has been completely frustrating and has taken way longer than I expected and I just want to be done with it so I can get engaged already, for Pete's sake. My boyfriend wants to wait until he has an actual ring...

Me too! Skinny jeans are great and I think they look better on me than straight or boot-cut jeans.

"A Road to Mental Health Through the Kitchen"

I thought this might appeal to some of the many chefs and mental health advocates we have here.

Yes to everything that Concorde, Whistler, Zed, Integrating Editor, and Shrinky Dink have said here. Also, vorpal, who's to say that Dr.LeaveMeAlone has become permanently turned off to the idea of marriage and family? He said in his question that his engagement ended recently, and hardly anyone I k...

Re: #79841 - Not Going Home for the Holidays

I'm spending Christmas day with my boyfriend's family. They're probably gonna be my family soon, so I might as well start trading off holidays now. (Boyfriend is coming to my family's for Thanksgiving, so his family gets us for Christmas this year.)

#79841 - Not Going Home for the Holidays

[Link] I would say that it becomes acceptable to miss Thanksgiving and Christmas when you decide it's acceptable. You don't need permission from anyone to make your own plans for the holidays. I was in a really bad place mentally and emotionally last holiday season and the thought of spending it wi...

Re: Engagement ring Board question

I like your dad's practicality, GA. I have really particular tastes, so I can't imagine not having any input on my engagement ring. My boyfriend and I are ring shopping right now and our plan is to pick out and buy a ring together and then he'll propose with it. Sure, it's not the most romantic thin...

Students from last school year who are STILL whining to me about their grades even though I have (a) moved to a new university and (b) have no power to change said grades because I am no longer at said university. I really want to be a jerk and just respond with this.

Re: In the news

Vorpal, what parts of the article led you to draw those conclusions? I read the article Portia linked a few times and I don't see anywhere it discussed findings about majority-female school boards. I also take issue with your assertion that the study and its authors are biased. (Full disclosure: I k...

Re: Decorating your boyfriend's room

The no-members-of-the-opposite-sex-in-your-bedroom thing was so thoroughly ingrained into me that even now, six years after I left BYU-approved housing, it's still a little weird for me to go into a guy's bedroom or have a guy in my bedroom.

The passage about meat sacrificed to idols specifically to avoiding causing others to violate their OWN consciences. So yes, you can eat idol-sacrificed meat all you want, just as long as it wouldn't cause someone else to sin in their own minds. A former idol-worshiper might feel like it wasn't oka...

Re: #78595 - Salary of religion professors

Except that there's a widely-acknowledged leaky pipeline in academia. It's a pretty well-established fact that women advance through the academic ranks at lower rates than men. A couple relevant links: http://www.the-scientist.com/?articles.view/articleNo/25887/title/Fixing-the-Leaky-Pipeline/ http:...

Re: #78595 - Salary of religion professors

That's extremely high for most of the liberal arts. Even for tenured professors. Tenured professors tend to be around 60-70k, unless they have a lot of notoriety. It depends on the field and the university. The $100,000 range is probably about right for professors in STEM fields or even some of the...
