Re: #87448 - Seven deadly sins
I'm slightly surprised (though I guess I shouldn't be, with how endemic things like wealth worship and prosperity doctrine are among Mormons) that no one said greed. That'd be my answer.

Re: Rant of the Day
I've told them the same thing. In my class of 16 (this semester) one student has asked to do a rewrite. That's about on par for other semesters (although one time I had eight in a class of 23.)

Re: quarter-life crisis: to PhD or not to PhD?
I've never heard of an unfunded PhD in any of my disciplines. The only thing that comes close is the education people, but those are usually funded by a primary ed school that is sending one of their employees.

Re: Rant of the Day
I say the same thing multiple times. I give examples. I even ask the specific students I'm worried about if they understand how to do it, and if they are going to do it in their paper. They demonstrate to me that they can do it. And then they make the same stupid mistake in their paper. I wish I cou...

Wait, there are PhD programs that aren't funded? Seriously? ....That's quite possibly the worst decision I've ever heard of.

Seems like the best thing to do would've been for the editors, after Zed's more substantial answer, to take that back to SNB and see if he wanted to delete his less substantive answer.

Squirrel, Bob and I are a firm maybe.
Although if we do come, it won't be for long. My nephew's wedding is that day.

You said Lima in your other post, and I assumed Peru. I was very confused as to why you'd have trouble finding something to do. But now it makes sense.

Tangentially related, but this reminds me of quantitative research done that demonstrates that there is a greater correlation between child and parental income in this country than there is between child and parental height.
Re: Obamacare
Honestly, though, a single-payer would be more efficient even in terms of bureaucracy. The difference is that people get outraged at any issue within a government system, even when those same issues are worse with a private company. Insurance companies can be way more inefficient than medicare for a...

I also think it is helpful to use savings systems that automatically take money out of your hands (even if it is just into another account) before you get it. This could be anything from a 401k/IRA contribution to a separate account, to a third-party system like Acorns. Decide what you can budget fo...

Re: Vasectomies
Cognoscente, I'd put the timeline even further back than that. At the beginning of the 20th century, when the eugenics movement was in full swing (and things like forced sterilizations were happening via state sanction) there were some sympathies for the movement within church leadership (although, ...

My other answer was getting pretty long, so I figured I'd answer your other questions separately. The process of leaving itself was fairly immediate. After wrestling with all of these questions, one day I just decided to stop going. I went from going to church pretty much every week to just not goin...

I'll also begin with a disclaimer of my own. This is a process that has taken years, has involved intense soul-searching, theorizing, thought, and actions, and will be impossible to sum up in a few paragraphs (even if this is a long comment by message board standards.) One of the most irritating thi...

Even worse than the beverages made from tamarind? (Jarritos has one) Or the ones made from (and in the flavor of) molasses, like Malta India?

I'm familiar with the article, and the demographics of the situation, but I think you're overstating Cognoscente's claim. Before we get into that, can you tell me what, exactly, your intent was with that particular article (which I read as an argument about rhetorical strategy, whereas the point Cog...
