Re: Feminism, Defined
Ah, I overlooked that aspect. Even though there might not be discrimination or preference in the profession as a whole, there definitely can be at individual firms. Carry on.

Re: Feminism, Defined
While I've heard of (but can't vouch for) a hiring preference for female engineers, I can assure you that she didn't get the job as an attorney simply because she is a woman. The legal profession has many, many female applicants. If she is good looking, then that could be the difference - law firms ...

Accept as true (though it very well might not be) that women in the work force are more likely than men to leave an employer for extended periods of time for maternity leave or to exit the workforce altogether in order to become a stay at home parent. Assume that this results in increased costs ass...

Re: Feminism, Defined
Let me ask about this. Accept as true (though it very well might not be) that women in the work force are more likely than men to leave an employer for extended periods of time for maternity leave or to exit the workforce altogether in order to become a stay at home parent. Assume that this results ...

Joint Tenancies
https://theboard.byu.edu/questions/65822 I started writing a comment, but I decided I will post it here so I won't have to worry about a character limit. (If an editor or writer wants to append it to the question, I am fine with that.) I am not a lawyer, but as a law student who loved property, I th...

Re: Sexually experienced girlfriend
Agreed with both of you. Agreed with Marduk on "sexually active" and likelihood. Agreed with Portia that she should get tested; you cannot be too sure. The guy she slept with might have said she was the only girl he slept with, but she can't be sure of that. She should ask for it as part o...

Re: #65668 - Documentary recommendations
I enjoy documentaries, but I consider myself a somewhat unsophisticated film viewer. SO! If anyone is interested in getting into documentaries, but is concerned they won't be interested, here are some documentaries I loved and you can rest assured they will have pop appeal. Darkon (about a group of ...

Re: Congrats to LJ and Eirene!
LJ and Eirene, you'll have to tell me how this works, because I have wondered. My little sister is a vegetarian for moral purposes; she believes the mistreatment of animals in food industry is horrendously wrong. She had a boyfriend for a long time and she essentially forced him into being a vegetar...

Re: Political discussion (formerly in Mormon art)
And just as a last note, Imogen, you are referring to social conservatives which make up a large part of the Republican party, though not all or even most of it. They, however, seem to be the most active in the primaries and vocal in the media so they tend to get the most notice.

Re: Political discussion (formerly in Mormon art)
This is an inconsistency in a lot of conservative's thinking. They assume the government is not equipped to deal with fiscal regulation and will make too many errors deducing the right policy, but that it is nearly infallible when you give the government a gun in some form or another (e.g. military ...

"Also, my committee seems like a trinity of capricious gods, who tell me to do one thing, then tell me to delete it, and then tell me to put it back in again." Isn't that the most irritating thing in the world? You spend hours doing something, then get told to correct it. OK, no big deal,...

Re: Spiritual but not religious (or not)
Don't have time to expound, but I think this trend has to do with the members of the Church often focusing on absolute arguments. "Either the Book of Mormon is true or not." "Either Joseph Smith was a prophet or not." It's somewhat systemic of the Us vs. The World mentality that ...

Re: Spiritual but not religious (or not)
Personally, as one who will probably stop attending church the day I graduate, I don't see myself as spiritual or religious. I'm open-minded about spirituality and religion, but it doesn't play a role in my life. On the other hand, I've met at least one student here who is very SBNR. He was the sor...

Or, conversely, does the suggestion that "bitch" and "nigger" are so broadly offensive mean there is an emerging fourth category based on immutable characteristics? The former is probably fine at the American Kennel Club Dog Show. Right, as is "damn" at Hoover's and &q...
