85636, 85572: websites "to the max"

Post by larry_wayne »

These two questions seem to be asked by the same person. I was interested in how the responses came out differently for each question. For the Facebook one, the question was categorized unter Computers-Internet and Self Improvement. The advice given is to delete the app, filter Internet, or replace the habit. On the other hand, the "Board addiction" question was assigned the categories Personal Purity and Board-Readers. Maybe it's just me, but Personal Purity seems a little extreme for this sort of question. The only serious answer says this.
But I think the key to kicking an addiction is to replace it with a healthier or more productive behavior.
I don't think Luciana is treating this like a real addiction (which it's almost certainly not), but can anyone who's currently on Board staff explain the "Personal Purity" label, which seems to imply a level of seriousness that doesn't really seem warranted? Thoughts on why/when a problem of excessive internet use becomes a problem of personal purity?

Addiction in general could be an issue of personal purity from some perspectives. I don't really know though. Anyone who's a full writer can categorize and that leads to inconsistencies sometimes when a question doesn't fit into a clear, single category.

Okay. Thanks. I guess what really bothered me wasn't the categorization but the question itself, in that the word "addiction" implies a seriousness (at least for me) that I don't think the question asker was taking into account, and I was surprised that that level of seriousness got carried through into some of the responses but not to others.

It's hard because some people use "addiction" pretty casually, but some people only use it to mean "something that's seriously affecting my life." Context is hard over the Internet.

Also, it just occurred to me that some of the writers keep categorizing things under "Personal Purity" as some sort of in-joke, and the editors don't always catch it.

Also, return of the local use of the word "addiction police," but even "something that's seriously affecting my life" trivializes what addiction truly is.

It's a bit of a touchy subject with me since I devoted my life to working with addicts for years and years. Ain't nobody addicted to the 100 Hour Board.

Or the internet.

Gaming MAYBE. Gambling MAYBE. It depends on whether compulsion and addiction are really really really the same thing in some cases or not.

Or porn.

But I don't want to stir the hornet's nest on that one again.

I try to steer clear of that one altogether.

Sounds like some South Korean kids have an Internet problem. At least to the point where they have made rehab centers. And an actual diagnosis by medical doctors there.
One-quarter of teens diagnosed with internet addiction will be hospitalized in a government-sponsored center, like Dr. Lee's practice. Shea visited Gangnam Eulji Hospital and tried out some of the unusual therapies.
