aggravating coworkers

Post by yayfulness »

Link.

I got called an apostate at work the other day. It... hurt, surprisingly. I mean, you could make a pretty good case that it's accurate, but given the intent behind it it was still a pretty unpleasant thing to hear.

My offense, incidentally, was arguing that if the Book of Mormon can be used as the basis for US laws, then the Quran totally can be used as the basis for US laws too. And also being a Democrat, and opposing the death penalty when the Book of Mormon endorses it.

I feel like if this happens again, it's totally HR-department worthy. Fairly cut and dried crossing the line, even if in jest.

Software developers seem to lean stone-cold libertarian, so my europhilia seems to come across as socialist.

This is the same guy who's been taken to HR at least half a dozen times for making inappropriate comments towards young female coworkers (he's in his mid-50s). I never liked him before that conversation, but I don't think he ever really caught on.

Ugh, I'm sorry, yayfulness. That sounds really uncomfortable and painful. I'm sorry that there isn't really anything you can do.

I just started working for the state of Nevada in the Social Security disability adjudication office. This means working with a lot of doctors and man do some of them think they are something. One in particular.

TBS: one of my friends works as medical office staff, and she once tweeted "if you think millennials are entitled, try telling a baby boomer on Medicare they have to make a $10 co-pay."

Egos are the worst. Unfortunately, they are never going to go away.

"You're never getting married? Then what are you going to do? You can't just work here for the rest of your life!"

Yes, because my life choices are restricted to a) get married and b) work fast food forever. There are no other options.
The Epistler was quite honestly knocked on her ethereal behind by the sheer logic of this.

One of my coworkers (who is bi and currently in a same-sex relationship) posted something on Facebook that said, "Date night with my sweetie!" with no further identifying details of said sweetie. Two of her fellow coaches sat her down and told her that it was completely inappropriate for her to post that and that "all the athletes are talking about it," even though she isn't FB friends with a single student.

I feel like "apostate" is just a really strong word in LDS culture and I frankly don't think it's ever appropriate to call someone that. It just has such negative connotations, even if the word is technically "accurate." Unfortunately, in a lot of situations it's hard to formally make a complaint about it, since it's not a widely-used word outside of Mormon culture and a lot of people who were never Mormon don't seem to understand the extent to which the word is a problem.

I tried to get Facebook to deal with a blatantly homophobic meme being circulated in some LDS circles, but they determined it didn't meet their standards for removal, and I'm 100% sure it's because they didn't understand how hurtful the word "apostate" is in LDS culture.

Yeah, understanding how the First Amendment works is totally heretical

I don't understand how people think that the BoM is a blanket endorsement of the death penalty? Like, it was a completely different culture with completely different resources for addressing crime and dealing with criminals??? And there's a huge difference between God saying "It was okay under circumstances XYZ" and "It is always the best thing"??? Like, we're so good at dismissing things like polygamy, blacks & the priesthood, etc., as being TOTALLY situational based on ALL THESE SPECIFIC CULTURAL THINGS THAT YOU GUYS AREN'T TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION IF YOU THINK IT WAS WRONG, but then we take the legal system of a culture that we know almost nothing about from over 2000 years ago and are like, yep, this totally means that God wants us to support the death penalty in the USA.

Ugggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. People are the worst.

This guy at my office sprays lysol disinfectant spray (the cleaning product) around the entire place like it's an air freshener (it is NOT). There is so much in the air that I can taste it all day and it sets of my migraine problems. Talking to him about it (for that last 10 months) hasn't worked. I even had the company buy a product he could use that wouldn't be so obnoxious. He won't have it. And I'm not the only one this irritates. I tried being an adult, but it didn't work. So while he was out, I took the lysol bottle outside and sprayed it until it was empty.

Not proud. But not sorry.

Wow, what a weird (and frankly super inappropriate) habit. And he persisted after multiple requests? Yeah, that guy needs a kick in the butt.
