This was an unpleasant throwback for me. The roommate of my high school crush was caught in a similar sting our freshman year at BYU, for soliciting sex from a cop posing as a 14yo. I used to go to the old rec center by Provo High School, and I distinctly remember swimming for exercise and being really hung up on how (1) someone I knew quite well from high school could be such a perv (2) how my crush could be so clueless. (Although now I don't think I would know if my roommate were up to no good! How I felt at the time though, a lot of anxiety.)
He was rich so his parents bailed him out. (Ugh.) He even tried to add me on FB -- yeahhhhh, no.
There was another article on really deviant (underage, I believe?) pornography destroying some BYU couple's engagement around Labor Day in the Daily Universe.
And, um, it's my humble opinion that the sexual repression actually directly causes some (not all) people to seek out weirder and weirder stuff because of the don't think of polar bears effect. I don't know anybody among us in the real world who has sexual compulsions or ANY interest in minors. Once the taboo falls away, you just don't really care that much.
And the Church is hung up on consensual same-sex relations? Ughhhhhhhh

I think that pedophilia/interest in minors is a different sexual orientation, and one that should not be pursued. "I don't know anybody among us in the real world who has sexual compulsions or ANY interest in minors." This is like me saying in high school that I didn't know any gay people. I actually did, but they hadn't come out to me. Someone who suffers from attraction to minors is unlikely to gain any social capital from it. But I also think social anxiety could contribute to being attracted to minors. It's a complex thing for sure.
