Re: Teaching About Rape

When I was recently looking up statistics about rape I came across this statement posted on the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) website “Rapists are more likely to be a serial criminal than a serial rapist.” Since RAINN claims to be “The nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization” I thought their statement might merit some thought. As evidence of this claim they use “2002 Recidivism of Prisoners Released in 1994 Study, 2002.” They say that “46% of rapists who were released from prison were re-arrested within 3 years of the release for another crime.” They further break that down in 18.6% for a violent offense, 14.8% for a property offense, 11.2% for a drug offense, and 20.5% for a public-order offense. http://www.rainn.org/get-information/st ... -offenders

It might be argued that rapists who go to prison are not typical of rapists for a variety of social reasons. And it might be argued that the stigma of being a released convict makes it difficult to find work and fit back into society. This is possible, but it also seems likely to me that the same sort of characteristics of a man that make him a serial criminal are also to be found in rapists. The willingness to take risks, the disregard for the rights and property of others, a sense of entitlement to what a man can get on his own, a lack of respect and sensitivity to the feelings of others, and other anti-social behaviors.

If it is true, and it seems reasonable to me, that what makes a rapist a rapist is the same as what makes a serial criminal what he is, then I believe the answer lies in the family. Over the years I’ve seen study after study demonstrate that the single most important factor in shaping a person to be either a serial criminal or a model citizen is the nature and quality of the home during childhood. A child raised in an intact family that consist of a biological mother and biological father living together in harmony has a much higher probability of becoming a law abiding member of society. Fathers who are worthy role-models are particularly important. As one example the US Departmant of Justice data, 1991 shows 60% of rapists come from homes with an absent father. http://www.wisconsinfathers.org/twoparents.htm See also http://www.theguardian.com/society/2001 ... rime.penal http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... eport.html

A long time ago I studied the effect of pornography on crime. I haven’t kept up with the latest research. It again seemed reasonable to me, and some research support it, that pornography teaches young men to objectify women, to take from women their individuality and status as independent reasoning and feeling beings beyond their sexuality. It desensitizes men to sex in the context of love, respect, commitment, and interpersonal relationships. Some pornography glorifies rape and promotes myths about rape and women stereotypes. Since these attitudes seem common to rapists, according to some theories, it would seem likely to believe that pornography makes rape more likely to occur. This source seems to outline some of the evidence. http://www.mecasa.org/joomla/images/pdf ... graphy.pdf There are many more references that could be cited.

Thanks for your research, Vorpal. You know me, I'm most persuaded by scientific studies. I wish children of single mothers didn't have it so badly, but they really are at a disadvantage compared to nuclear families.
