Stupid government policies?

Does anyone else find it somewhat ridiculous that LA recently banned plastic bags? Oh, and I think the restaurant thing is stupid too.

laws that would force isps to filter the internet are the same as laws that force stores to use paper bags: the problems exist, but the laws really wont stop the bad things from happening and will often just cause headaches for those who want to do the right thing anyway.

i live in NY currently, so i'll give that a shout out. it's really not a big deal. it's a city where a LOT of people count their calories, and maybe it will make some think twice before buying that 800 calorie big mac. i know seeing the calorie count at mcdonald's reaffirmed my decision to never eat there again (haven't had it in almost 6 years now). the trans fat thing really isn't that stupid when you realize new yorkers eat 1/3 of their meals out on average. this isn't a place where people cook. most restaurants were already phasing it out, so again, not a huge deal. and if you think about how many plastic bags are used in LA in a day, you'd probably be appalled. imagine all of those just floating around in a dump cause where else will they go? i always take mine to the recycling thing at the grocery store, but i'm buying canvas bags when i move back to texas cause they don't recycle plastic bags. think about how many plastic bags you use. even if you use them to line trash cans, it's still an insane amount. and in a city like LA, it's massive.

I can see how forcing ISPs to filter content would certainly cause problems, especially if the filters prevented you from going to an innocent site mistakenly. Plus those who want to look at porn bad enough will just find a way to get past the filter.

I think it would be better if the laws made the ISP's have the anti-porn filter as a free optional service, so those who want the filter can have it.

I have a lot to say about porn filtering and ISP's. I studied it a good deal for the last year. However, I can't spare the time to go into it right now. Ask me tomorrow after I finish taking the bar exam.

The researcher in me prevailed, and I thought I should link all of you to articles about table scraps and styrofoam developments in Seattle. (The "Green Fee" is an initiative which charges you extra for each bag when you go shopping, I believe.)
