48803 Redheads
I hadn't really noticed that there is a higher percentage of redheads in the Church, or at BYU, than elsewhere. I wonder if it is true.
I can answer Whistler's implied question: "It's just a sign that redheads are somehow inherently superior to others. Kind of kidding. While Scotland and Ireland have the highest percentages of redheads (approximately 13 and 10 percent, respectively), the US has the largest flat-out population of redheads. One wonders if some of this Scottish and Irish redhead blood got converted and immigrated to America!" Some of my ancestors came from Ireland. They joined the church in the 1830s and immigrated to America. They had numerous descendents - the children were polygamous. Many of those descendents are redheads.
Of course, not all the redheads at BYU are my relatives, but I know some of them are.

One downside of being a redhead is that you can't really get away with anything. My mother relates a time when she was young and stole a watermelon from a nearby garden with a group of her friends. Every single one of her friends got away clean, but being the only one with hair so red ended any of her future plans of larceny.
It does seem as though we are slowly establishing our hold on the world though. I saw a little Hispanic girl in southern California that had coarse, tightly curled, auburn hair and bright blue eyes. It sure made you look twice.

(bismark and Imogen would have some seriously smokin' children.)
I think BYU/the LDS church/UT does have a disproportionate amount of redheads, because we are of disproportionate British/Irish/Scottish ancestry (the purple is British and the blue is German). Britons are more likely to be redheaded than those of other national origins. I think this also helps to explain our pale skin, freckles, and Mormon-sounding last names (Udall is one that comes to mind).
