I discovered that there is a little more to the story. There is something called "non-owner car insurance" that you can get, and that can save you quite a bit of money (apparently) if you plan on renting cars with any kind of frequency.

Also, if you have a good credit card, it will generally cover car rental claims in that unlikely event. I know from experience.

Don't waste your money on the overpriced car rental insurance that the car rental agencies offer. It usually doesn't cover much more than your credit card insurance will cover. Check the fine print.

Yeah, that's actually the reason I finally broke down and got a credit card (not just a debit card) this year.
