Stuff we're reading / watching / listening to
Re: Stuff we're reading / watching / listening to
well, shoot! I thought I read a study that said telling someone a word they couldn't remember helped alleviate tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon, but this study suggests that offering a clue is more helpful: http://digest.bps.org.uk/2015/07/why-wo ... -your.html

Whistler, have you read Nimona? Boyfriend was super happy to buy it for me and I LOVE IT.

I give it my strong recommendation. Here is her site for those who like graphic novels and insanity.Whistler wrote:I haven't, but I've read a few issues of the Lumberjanes and I liked them :-)Portia wrote:Whistler, have you read Nimona? Boyfriend was super happy to buy it for me and I LOVE IT.

I finally read Persuasion, and it was awesome because I knew nothing about it going in. Literally the only things I knew about the plot beforehand were that someone fell off a wall at the coast and somebody wrote a letter while pretending to write a different letter. Now I need to dig up a movie version to watch. Recommendations?

OOOH! I love Persuasion! I had the same experience reading it for the first time not knowing anything about it. The only movie version I have watched is the one on Netflix, which does a decent job. Though in order to communicate to the audience how Anne is feeling, I feel like they took away a bit of the reserve that she has in the book.
Thanks to IMDB, I can tell you that it is this version that I have watched and found to be fairly accurate and enjoyable (minus the thing I mentioned above).

The Epistler was quite honestly knocked on her ethereal behind by the sheer logic of this.

Albert Einstein talking about language. I defy you not to picture Ludwig von Drake doing the talking as you listen to it.

Second the recommendation for the 1995 version. (There's a newer version that I need to watch some time, but I love the 1995 version so much that I own it and watch it probably at least once a year.)Indefinite Integral wrote:OOOH! If anyone would actually read a review blog of my forays into so-called chick lit and YA, let me know.
Re: Stuff we're reading / watching / listening to
Whistler and Mico and others, are there other books like Daniel Kahneman? I want a really solid non-fiction psychological title in my life after a summer diet of chick lit.

Have you read any Steven Pinker? I really liked his The Stuff of Thought. Oh, I just checked Goodreads and it looks like you have read it. Maybe you'd like some other books by him. If you want something really math-y Godel, Escher, Bach is a classic. And I've heard good things about The Power of Habit.

Haha, yes, I'm a big Steven Pinker fanatic and I know I have unread volumes of his in my massive collection in my grandma's garage.Whistler wrote:Have you read any Steven Pinker? I've started the other two, as well. Leaning towards Pinker for sure, thanks!

You might like "Louder Than Words" by Ben Bergen, it's all about embodied cognition which is pretty big in cognitive science right now (esp psychology and linguistics).

Freedom Evolves by Daniel Dennett, a philosopher who simultaneously accepts determinism and free will.

Lot of turbulence in my life right now.
I got a hand, so I got a fist
So I got a plan, it's the best that I can do
Now we'll say it's in God's hands
But God doesn't always have the best goddamn plans, does he?

The darkness fears
What darkness knows
But if you’ve never known the darkness
Then you’re the one who fears the most
