I think I read in a J.K. Rowling thing (or maybe it was just speculation) about how earlier in the book, the kids had seen a figure on a broomstick flying away across the lawns. Someone speculated that it was Dumbledore, which makes sense to me because he is the only one that can remove the boundaries protecting Hogwarts, right?
