Family Search grumbldy grumble

Post by Katya »

Why can't I find a family group sheet or other listing of descendants of a person? All I can do is navigate to the "trees" search and find their ancestors, but not their descendants. :?

In the tree view, can you not click the arrows to the left of the children to see their children, etc.?

I wasn't seeing any children at all. Just parents.

That's weird. Did you try searching for the children by name to see if they somehow didn't get connected properly to the parents?

If yes, my only other thoughts are 1)the children never got put into New Family Search, or 2)if you're sure they should be in there, contact NFS Help. They're usually really good at getting back to you about NFS problems.

The kids are definitely there, because I can go from a child "up" to his parents, but then there's no link back to the child on the next page. (It's like I can only go "upstream," not "downstream.")

Here's what I see on on one page:

Ancestral File Record

« Back to search results
name: Harold Christopher WHITING
gender: Male
birth: 1902 Dec 25
Springville, Utah, Ut
death: 1989 Dec 15
Neola, Duchesne, Utah
burial: 1989 Dec 19
Neola, Duchesne, Utah
AFN: 65W9-DM
Parents
father: Daniel Abraham WHITING (AFN: )
mother: Mary Emily KIENKE (AFN: )

Source Citation
, etc.

(The stuff in blue is a link.) Here's what I see if I follow the first link:

Ancestral File Record

« Back to search results
name: Daniel Abraham WHITING
gender: Male
birth: 1858 May 6
Manti, Sanpete, Ut
death: 1921 Sep 8
Lapoint, Uintah, Ut
burial: 1921 Sep 11
Neola, Duchesne, Ut
AFN: 1N7D-DT
Parents
father: Edwin WHITING (AFN: )
mother: Mary Ann WASHBURN (AFN: )
Marriages (1)
spouse: Mary Emily KIENKE (AFN: )
marriage: 1880 Jun 17
(eh) Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Ut

Source Citation
, etc.

Where am I supposed to be seeing the children?

Just out of curiosity, are the children still living? Because I know there are safety precautions in place for living people. Though, if you could see them on their own, you should be able to see them from their parents. I don't know if that's a reason at all, but the dates of death made me wonder if maybe possibly that could be it. (Like, I can see my family, but Yellow can't and vice versa. I can see him as my husband, but then it looks like he has no parents.)

Ok, so remember that I know nothing about genealogy. :) But, I just searched for Daniel Abraham Whiting married to Mary Emily Kienke and found what I believe to be the right person and… I can see their kids. Henrietta, Daniel Lester, Mary Rhuperta (poor girl), Mary Ann, Burdett Kienke, etc. Here, screenshot: http://tardis1.tinygrab.com/cCUA Is this not what you see? Or, if you click Spouses and Children down below and get this: http://tardis1.tinygrab.com/cCUB Not what you see?

Wait-- are you using new.familysearch.org or just www.familysearch.org?

So am I, DL. My question was actually directed at Katya. I should have clarified. I'm glad you and I are on the same page (ha!), though.

I figured you were, but due to the ambiguity, I figured I'd answer, too. :)

I was using regular Family Search although I discovered that if I scroll down to use the previous version of Family Search, that works, too. So apparently new Family Search and old Family Search both work, but not current Family Search.
