Encore - Christmas carols!

Post by Katya »

This round is for Christmas carols. To qualify, it must be a Christmas-themed song that is at least 50 years old. (I was going to say it had to be 100 years old, but I'm OK with allowing stuff like "Silver Bells.")

In addition, we are also going with an alphabet theme. Every song must begin with a different letter of the alphabet, until all of the letters in the alphabet are used (or until we can't think of any more). If there's more than one person left at the end of the first alphabet round, we'll do a second one.

Here's the master list of songs used:

A - Angels We Have Heard on High
B - Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella
C - Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire
D - Deck the Halls
E - Et admirabile sacramentum ("O Magnum Mysterium")
F - Fum, Fum, Fum
G - Good King Wenceslas
H - Hark the Herald Angels Sing
I - I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing In
J - Jingle Bells
K -
L - Let It Snow
M - Minuit Chrétiens
N - Nightingale Carol
O - O Little Town of Bethlehem
P - Past Three O'Clock
Q - Quittez bergers (O Leave Your Sheep)
R - Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
S - Santa Baby
T - The Twelve Days of Christmas
U - Ukrainian Bell Carol
V - The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy
W - What Child Is This
X -
Y - Ya viene la vieja
Z -

A - Angels from the Realms of Glory
B -
C -
D - Ding Dong Merrily on High
E -
F - Far, Far Away on Judea's Plains
G -
H - Hallelujah Chorus
I - It Came Upon the Midnight Clear
J -
K -
L -
M -
N -
O - O Holy Night
P - Puer Natus
Q -
R -
S -
T -
U -
V -
W -
X -
Y -
Z -

Clarifications, rules and exceptions:

Q. What happens if I thought my song was 50 years old, but it turns out it wasn't?

A. You can go again if it's still the same day. (I.e., you won't be disqualified for not knowing the exact age of your song; I just want to push this round towards more traditional songs. You can also double check the age of your song after you post, if you're concerned it may not qualify.)

Q. Can I post a song that's not in English?

A. Sure, but you can only use a song once, no matter what lyrics you're using. So, you can post "Un Flambeau, Jeannette, Isabelle" (and have it count for F) or "Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabella" (and have it count for B), but once you've posted either version, the other version is out, too. Also, if you post a non-English song that has a well known English translation, please post the name of the translation so that we know it's out.

Q. What if I can't remember the exact name of my song?

A. You can count a song under its name or under the beginning of the first line. So, you can post "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas" and have it count for I or for W (because the official name of the song is "White Christmas").

Clear as mud?

I'll start:

"Angels we have heard on high, sweetly singing o'er the plains."

-"Angels We Have Heard on High."

"On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me twelve drummers drumming, eleven pipers piping, ten lords a leaping, nine ladies dancing, eight maids a milking, seven swans a swimming, six geese a laying, five golden rings, four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves, and a partridge in a pear tree."

On December five and twenty, fum, fum, fum.

"Fum, Fum, Fum"
The Epistler was quite honestly knocked on her ethereal behind by the sheer logic of this.

Nice.

Also, I forgot to specify if Day 1 ends tonight or tomorrow night. Do you think I should keep it open for two full days?

From the General Rules:

Right, but the first day is also generally not a full day. (And for some reason I wanted the days of the round to match up with the days in December. Let's chalk that up to me being more OCD when I'm feeling sick.) That said, I think I'll go for two days, anyway, because it's Christmas Carols, so pretty much everyone should be able to participate.

Darn you Whistler. That's probably my favorite Christmas carol.

Dashing through the snow, in a one-horse open sleigh, o'er the fields we go, laughing all the way. Bells on bobtails ring, making spirits bright, what fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight! Oh-

Interesting! (Also, you're a day ahead because we're still on Day 1. So you can skip Day 2, if you like.)

"Santa Baby, a '54 convertible too--light blue. I'll wait up for you dear, Santa Baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight."

--"Santa Baby"

Not sure if it's a "carol" per se, but it's definitely old enough.
