Patriarchal blessing age

There's a question in the inbox about Patriarchal blessings, so I thought I'd take a poll to see when people typically choose to get theirs.

I don't quite remember, but I think I was 18.

I was 19, about to go on a mission. My bishop was surprised I hadn't received one yet. I didn't think I was ready for one and wanted to wait, but he kind of forced me to get it before the mission.

I think it's a requirement. I remember at the MTC they asked us if there was anyone who had A) not been officially set apart as a missionary, B) Hadn't been endowed, or C) not gotten their patriarchal blessing, and if so, to go with them so they could take care of it.

I wanted mine when I was 13, but my parents thought it was too early. I ended up waiting until I was 21.

I wanted something cool to happen when I turned 16 (other churches have coming-of-age rituals about that age), so I chose to get mine when I turned 16.

I don't have one, nor do I intend to get one.

Interesting. May I ask why?

I don't see the point. I have enough avenues of communication with on high; for me personally, communication with the spirit is near constant. I just never really understood why I'd need a blessing from someone else to understand the Lord's purpose for me.

I've not received any inspiration from mine, so I definitely see your point. I fasted three days before receiving my blessing, expecting it to be the most spiritual event of my life. It was quite the letdown.

I was 13. My dad and I got them at the same time (he was 51).

I think having one could save you a lot of worry and grief - I know mine has.

I don't know, but every time I come back to this thread, that comment stands out to me as harmlessly intended, but hilariously over-pious. I just imagine Che Guevara dressed in the Dalai Lama's garb in a constant state of meditation.

Yeah, that's what I figured. That's why I added the "for me personally" but I don't think it tamed it enough. That is one of my personal gifts, however, so I'm not going to deny it.

No offense intended in my observation. I definitely did not think you meant it in any sort of "Look at me" way. Nor do I get that vibe from you generally. It's just a fun sound bite to pull out and created a funny image.

Yeah, there's revolutionaries that definitely fit that image, but che wasn't one of them. Hrmm, maybe I should change my picture to Ghandi....

A guy who often shows up in my Twitter stream has Rorschach from Watchmen as his avatar, so now I associate that image with a guy who's curmudgeonly but ultimately kind-hearted.
