I remember my girls coming home from girls camp singing this song. It kind of bothered me as they took particular delight in the way he died, squish squash, and that the poor guy was sent down below to sizzle and fry. They even felt this punishment was entirely justified! In the song the guy is a total jerk. And the moral of the story for many girls is to “never trust guys (they lie).” So I did some research and found that there are hundreds of different versions of this song. Which was the true version? I now believe I have the true, inspired version that I obtained by putting together various versions and adding a few words of my own.

She said that she loved him and Oh, how she sighed!....

He said that he loved her, and Oh, how he tried!....

She said she believed him, but 'm, 'm, she didn't....

They wed in the temple, but somehow she died,....

The tombstone fell over, and squish, squash he died,....

Okay, I'm saying this tongue in cheek. I just wanted to defend guys. I'm sure the old version will always be sung with relish when the guys aren't around.

I was always annoyed by the number of songs we had about boys, since I didn't care about them basically the whole time I went to girls camp. I wish we had more songs about food and smashing stuff!

Thanks again, everyone. My camp songbooks were a huge hit with the ward, and it was really fun to teach the girls songs they had never heard of. And now I have the basis for next year's songbook. I'll just keep adding to it.

I guess it's more of a kids' song. Looking at the lyrics now, I find them kind of nonsensical and silly.

The way I always sang "Down by the Bay," each verse is made up on the spot. So if you think of something, you jump in at the appropriate time. This makes it more appealing to a mixed child/adult audience, in my opinion.
