My favorite answer for this is always from Much Ado. "Why every day! Tomorrow!" Which your sister uses, but maybe only with me, because I know that she just likes to quote it too, and it doesn't mean anything.Genuine Article wrote:So when are you getting married? (I kid. I kid because I care.)

Uh, not M-Lite, so I guess it's DJ Burgers Supreme. (How dare you make me hungry for them after they're closed!) The one that gets that question all the dang time, poor thing.

So, I went in to talk to my bishop for another get to know you interview. One of his first questions he asked about bringing up the fact that I have a boyfriend was, "So, why aren't you engaged?"
"It's only been three months..."
"So?"
"We're not a normal BYU couple.."

That would bother me SO MUCH. Your reply was very diplomatic, good work!

I think I mollified him when I explained my situation in a very mature way and basically explained the fact that I can be patient with however long it takes us to come to the decision. Took awhile to convince him of that though.

Re: "When Are You Getting Married?"
What a contrast to my own experience at BYU. I remember my last temple recommend interview at BYU with a member of the stake presidency. I was close to graduating from BYU with a Master's degree and was planning to go to another school with a Ph.D. program. At the conclusion of the interview I asked him about something that was bothering me. I hadn't asked my bishop for some reason. "I've been dating this girl for several years now."Tally M. wrote:So, I went in to talk to my bishop for another get to know you interview. "And?"
"Should I get engaged?"
"Whoa! Now that is the $64,000 question!"
I don't remember much of what he said after that. I know he didn't say "yes" and he didn't say "no." He just talked about studying it out in my mind and receiving my own answer to prayer.
Re: "When Are You Getting Married?"
See, I think your bishop has a potential conflict of interest, here. In theory, he should be encouraging ward members towards happy, healthy relationships, on whatever time frame is appropriate. In practice, he has a strong incentive to rush couples into getting engaged and then getting married, because then they're no longer his problem (and no longer at risk for chastity violations).Tally M. wrote:So, I went in to talk to my bishop for another get to know you interview. Regardless, the answer is: Not anytime in the foreseeable future.

True. I was thinking more in the abstract, and less about your specific situation.Tally M. wrote:Regardless, the answer is: Not anytime in the foreseeable future.

Congratulations Portia.
Re: "When Are You Getting Married?"
Thank you, but now I'm really self-conscious. I'm not engaged. Now I've jinxed it.
