Re: Answers I liked
My mom uses his nasty comparison for standards, comparing standards to brownies. Basically, if there's only a little bit of badness in the movie/book/song/whatever, she'll say "there's only a little poop in your brownie." I may adapt that to "there's only a little bacon in your ice c...

Re: #68926 Feet
This question had the exact nature of a sincere modesty question combined with an extreme situation, but didn't admit in any way that the situation was unusual. That's the exact recipe for satire. That's it, exactly. That's what I was thinking but hadn't figured out how to articulate. (Also, the us...

Re: #68926 Feet
Maybe my satire detector needs to be checked or something, but I honestly can't believe that this question wasn't mocking people who write similar questions (or letters to the DU) about other things (usually low-cut or sleeveless tops). And I wasn't even one of the ones who answered it. The satire i...

Re: Laptop issues
I bought one a couple of days ago and it seems to be working fairly well. (The base isn't getting as hot, although it's still hotter than I'd like.) I expect that my computer will still die on me some time in the near future, although maybe now it's in six months instead of six days. (More importan...

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
So I'm doing this family med elective right now, and pretty much every day my preceptor tells me to go home and look something up on the internet and then tell her about it tomorrow. Today it was, "Which antidepressant doesn't lower your sex drive?" and now because I googled that I am get...

Re: Would you spend the rest of your life in six little pods
Actually, I'd say a lot of people would want to go to Mars. It is the not coming back part that I think most people would have issue with. I wouldn't have a problem with this (again, if I weren't married). Of course, I'd carefully make sure that they'd done their due diligence to reduce the risk th...

Re: Would you spend the rest of your life in six little pods
I think this would be kind of a no-brainer, actually, if I weren't married. Who wouldn't want to go to Mars?
Then again, Eirene can't fathom why anyone would ever do this, which baffles me as much as my position baffles her.

Re: "Reserving" a Twitter name
I can't think of any reason that wouldn't work, though if you have any followers on your current one you'd want to give them a heads-up so they don't wonder "Who is this random person I didn't know I was following?" (I haven't actually tried this, though, so I don't know if there's a "...

Re: I Dreamed a Dream
I thought that was buttercream! The gross one. My dream wedding cake frosting was delicious, obviously! (Like the groom - boomksh!) Whew! I know there are some very valid reasons for picking fondant, but taste is definitely not one of them. And if you're going to dream up that cake, taste is obviou...

They suggested that you bring a GPS? That's...kind of awesome. I assume if you did, you'd be looking for one that will work without a car? (E.g., one you can mount to a bike, or use when on foot?)Indefinite Integral wrote:Maybe I'll be lucky, or just rely on the gps they suggested we bring...

Re: Baby names
Closer to the original topic, my mother made up the name for one of my sisters - Brekke. I've actually read this name before; Anne McCaffrey used it for one of her important secondary characters in the Dragonriders of Pern books . A little searching turned up that it's also a village in Norway and ...

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
From Board Question #46734, it was a committee formed by Joseph F. Smith in 1920. (Also, I believe that commenter meant 1981, not 1891, simply because 1891 is not after 1920. Also, a new version of the Book of Mormon was released in 1981.)Defy V wrote:Does anyone know who wrote the pronunciation guide?

Re: Job Screening Software
Nearly every job I have began when I chose to bypass a gatekeeper (e.g. automated resume review) and directly contact an individual hiring. To be fair, I've annoyed some recruiters as well, but it's ultimately been worth it. Same here, except without having to bypass anything. Pretty much every job...

Re: Economics of Printers
One thing I considered throwing in, but decided wasn't worth it, is that the print cartridges that come with a new printer do not have as much ink as a retail cartridge does. They have quite a bit less, actually. That's why they run out so quickly. (In other words, getting a free cartridge with a ne...

To me that sounds like they gave us a replacement server, but so recently that CPM hasn't had a chance to set things up yet. If so...progress! (But I could be wrong, so wait until something more official.)

Re: Secondary water
From what I can find it's common to use irrigation water for gardens, but you may want to check with the city/county water department if you're concerned; I imagine they can give you a recommendation, plus they presumably can answer questions about the water quality (salinity, any chance of pollutan...

Re: "Convince yourself"
So, in other words, Marduk just needs to convince himself that this usage is acceptable and common. [cough] Haha. I just realized something that might help: I don't think Marduk is really saying that our usage is wrong. He's just saying that he doesn't like it because it sounds weird to him. In tha...

Re: "Convince yourself"
Hrmm, I think I might be seeing the problem. From Websters: "convince: to overcome by argument" and here's the kicker, the second definition: "obsolete: demonstrate, prove" So it seems like you folks are just [using] an antiquated version of the word. I agree with Eirene and Ner...
