My favorite insult is pomme de terre. except that everyone I use it on starts laughing. I really need to learn to say potato in a language not many people know. Kartoffel? Peruna? Terpomo? Buntàta? Krumpir? Kentang? Kiazi? Ovy? Aardappel? (which, oddly enough, means the same thing as pomme de terr...

In a completely communistic society, the tax rate would be 100%, but really, there would be no such thing as your money, so you'd have nothing to pay your tithe on. In an ideal 'law of consecration' society, I think the leaders of the community would pay a tithe on the community money, thus taking ...

Or German. If people yell at me in German, I tell them that "I don't speak Nazi!" So mean! However, if they were doing it to annoy you... ehh I was very committed to the "Saying I love you in German sounds like you are swearing at them" thing, until I went to the German ward one...

What do you like about them? (I'm curious because I've never understood the appeal of dead languages over living ones.)

There should be specifically proscribed methods for observing the Sabbath, obeying the Word of Wisdom, paying tithing, dressing modestly, etc. And then we would add a hedge around the law, to make sure we never broke them. That worked great with the Law of Moses. :P Now it looks like I was making f...

That's an interesting assumption. Do you think it's true of all gospel principles, i.e., He wants us all to follow the Word of Wisdom in the same way?

We actually asked another writer not to use her reader alias for that reason. (I don't know if she was going to, but there would have been too much confusion between her and another writer.)

I have always used a word processor (in my case, OpenOffice) to create my resumes. However, I've considered using a spreadsheet before, since it would help with some of the columns and formatting difficulties I often face when I use a word processor. I always put everything in a table, then make th...

I don't think that the missionaries in Champaign-Urbana were under any such prohibition. (After all, they were serving on a college campus, so they would have been ignoring nearly half the population.)

I'm a kind expert on grammar. I don't use my expertise (such as it is) to hurt people. I even wrote a blog post to that effect. Well, it is always good that you don't use your grasp of English grammar for the forces of evil, or else we'd all be doomed. I believe in using my powers for good. :D

For certain purposes (legal status, qualified benefit recipients, etc.) the government can and should decide who is family, precisely because many people (such as yourself) have fluid concepts of family. These concepts are impracticable and unworkable in the sphere of governmental administration. N...
