Re: Stuff we're reading / watching / listening to
I'm delving into the works of Olivier Messiaen today, starting with Quartet for the End of Time , which has possibly the most interesting backstory and unusual first performance of any piece that I'm aware of. (See the video's description, I'm too lazy to restate it here.) Also, can I just say that ...

I definitely thought this song was by Mumford & Sons when I heard it on the radio for the first time today. I guess it's possible for good things to come from American Idol, after all.

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
Today I made a really stupid mistake. I can't go into details and it probably won't matter in the long run, but boy do I feel dumb. I know the feeling. I did something a couple days ago that probably hurt a friend of mine a bit, and while I'm sure she's forgotten it entirely, I'm still having a har...

I have spent the past hour or so watching clips of Phineas and Ferb instead of doing calculus.

Re: I Dreamed a Dream
I had a dream that I was kicking zombie butt in the zombie apocalypse. My homemade flame thrower was particularly effective. Ha, you reminded me of when I was maybe 10 or 11 when I duct taped an air freshener to a hollow plastic oar to a soup can with a hole in the bottom for my own homemade flame ...

Re: Baby names
The 'nym used by the asker of this question reminded me of a joke my roommate tells of a woman who names her daughter La-a. How would you pronounce that name?
The answer? Ladasha. (La-dash-a.) When he told the joke, he said he didn't know if someone made it up or if it had really happened.

You all (and some other people) are reminding me why I ought to be happy that I'm single, with no interests and nobody interested in me. It makes life so much simpler.
In other news, when waking up at 7 qualifies as sleeping in, you know that something is seriously screwed up.

Re: Laborers in the Vineyard
I was actually really disappointed for the same reason. Eternal life is the million-dollar paycheck at the end of the day, blessings in mortality are the pennies we pick up off the ground while working. Yeah, they're worth something, but if you focus on who got more pennies, you're missing the entir...

Awkward, mostly because Smurf is actually the friend who first introduced me to the Board. I'll have to ask her which one(s) [questions] aren't actually hers. Has anything like this ever happened before?

It happens to me all the time, too, with old friends or people I just never got to know particularly well. Not to mention just about everybody I knew on my mission.

This one made my day. Best build-up and ending for a question like this that I've ever seen on the Board, I think.

My mom once met a married woman named Phyllis Steen.Portia wrote:I hate gimmicky names. I very seriously dated a guy whose last name would have made my full name the cheesiest thing ever, so I would have naturally refused to change. No Candy Canes or Justin Cases for me!

Also, I definitely assumed for a second that "Domino" was referring to a boy. It seems more like a guy's name to me. (Well, it doesn't seem like a name at all. But if I force myself to think of it as a name, it seems like it would fit better with a guy.)

My immediate reaction: River Song. Doctor Who has made the name River acceptable to me. The other three... not really.

It technically isn't a college. Actually, I'm not sure exactly what it IS. But both halves of the International Relations major (Economics and Political Science) are in the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences, so that's what I put.

I can't believe it. The Kennedy Center isn't listed.
