Re: stand for truth (various questions on the front page)

Didn't mean for my statement to be a personal attack on anyone: I guess I just feel that BYU students can be somewhat, well, naive when they want to be BOTH popular with the country at large AND have their unusual beliefs broadcast. Framing it merely in terms of "debate" misses a lot of v...

Re: stand for truth (various questions on the front page)

does this extend to the ACA decision? Citizens United? I'd LOVE to see strongly worded letters about either issue, but no, I guess it doesn't involve sex) For the record, I would LOVE to see questions about King v. Burwell, citizens united, and other cases. But as a personal rule, I don't answer qu...

Re: BQ 81245 Religious Rights of Business Owners

I mean, I think the distinction is pretty clear. I really hope lawmakers and courts will get it right, and people will follow suit over time. People should not be required to do things they find unconscionable, but they shouldn't have the right to find certain people unconscionable. (This would mak...

Re: #78280 breast size / transgender individuals

Let's set aside for the moment that Haleakala refuses, for reasons obscure to me, to address the reality TV contestant by the pronoun he prefers (speaking of speech that is legal but immoral -- the only reason I can think is to make a snide point). "Making a snide point" wasn't the reason...

Thanks NerdGirl, I really appreciate that. Now that I look at it, the post I made was probably a little over the top. Also, I appreciate the discussion, because so many of the things we write about are matters of opinion. Thanks! :)

Re: #78104 - vegan missionary

Hello Everyone, I find Haleakala's proposal as rude as if I were to have missionaries over and have coffee, wine, and wear a swimsuit. Common social courtesy. good grief just respect people's beliefs and if you just can't get your head around feeding a vegetarian or vegan missionary, just politely d...

Re: Credit Report Dispute

Is the "credit issuer" in this case the apartment complex, or the collection agency? Do you know? Thanks for the link. In my friend's case, he had to talk to the credit reporting companies and the bank that he supposedly owed. I think the "credit issuer" is the person you owe mo...

Re: Credit Report Dispute

Don't just sent a letter. You must use their forms or they don't have to acknowledge it. Clark Howard had a pretty good guide: http://www.clarkhoward.com/news/clark-howard/personal-finance-credit/challenging-errors-your-credit-report/nCkPL/ I didn't need these instructions, but a friend of mine did...

Re: a partner

what we can count on men for, if we’re lucky and we choose to have a partner, is to be just that—a partner. Someone who stands in his own space even as he respects our standing in our own I don't read this as cynical. I read this as both realistic and positive. What objection do Christofferson or H...

Re: #76449 - viral media

I wonder if that rule would hold true for more traditional forms of art as well. The study NPR talked about made it sound like they used primarily modern forms of media. I wonder if the rule hold for more traditional art like literature and classical music.

Re: Feeling God's Love

Having this classified under self-improvement frustrates me a bit. I have only once in my life had a fleeting feeling of God's love, and my emotions at that time were seriously unreliable, so I don't know if that was actually coming from God. I've been doing everything the answer suggested for year...

Re: Which reader is the meanest?

There's a balance between making things too wordy and making things brief. Sometimes, all it really needs is a simple link or quick explanation with not much more. It is possible to try and make it longer (when it only needs a quick answer) but it's usually not worth it, and it ends up sounding ove...

Maybe I'm wrong. I'd be interested to see an average question length compared to before. You've been here longer. :)

Re: Which reader is the meanest?

I thought this reader's question was a bit harsh, and I don't think the board has become overall meaner, but I do think there is a higher percentage of "mean" answers. I think a better word for "mean" is probably apathetic though. There are a lot of quick, simple questions that c...
