Re: 85836 - The return of the addiction police
So, what is the difference between a habit you can't quit even after trying and addiction? I feel sure there's a difference because I would never say I'm addicted to chewing my nails, even though I have tried unsuccessfully to break the habit. On the other hand, I have a couple of friends that I wou...

Re: Buying a House
We bought a townhouse specifically so someone else would keep up on the maintenance. We don't have to shovel our own snow, clean our own gutters, do any landscaping, etc. and it's been really great for us since neither of us is really interested in that. Try to anticipate what you will want in a hom...

Re: spouse solicitousness regarding pain
Interesting! My husband has a chronic condition that causes him quite a lot of pain at times (damaged tendons in his feet), and I would agree with the study that if either of us treats it like a huge deal it just makes it harder to deal with. When he complains I don't ignore him but I do usually jus...

Unwanted kissing (84886)
Luciana's answer to the make-out question had a really jarring element to me. When she told her friend that she was subjected to unwanted kissing, he told her it was just kissing and not a big deal. Maybe I'm just a sheltered Mormon, but to me being kissed unexpectedly, unwelcomly, and prolongedly s...

Re: What makes you happy today?
My life since July has been incredibly busy. I've been working 45-hour weeks, freelancing 10-20 hours a week, and I'm a full time grad student (plus I have a one-year-old). Today I finally feel like there's a light at the end of the tunnel. I finished my last class except for my capstone! The goal i...

Re: bisexual feeling undatable
Even more than not being enticing (I'd probably be willing to try something that didn't sound enticing), some things make me revolted/nauseous. Those are off the table for me.

Re: LDS Handbook changes - SSM, Apostasy, and children
I think the policy is hard to take in, and I'm sorry for the pain it has/will cause. My husband was a convert and has mentioned that he would have felt hurt and excluded if he hadn't been allowed to be baptized just because his (divorced) parents were both living with people they weren't married to....

Re: 84363
It goes both ways. My husband stayed in a less-than-perfect job that wasn't doing much for his career because it was laid back and allowed him to spend a lot of time with our daughter for her first year. I think just assuming that men don't care about spending time with their babies or that it doesn...

Re: Large knife
That's true, and I do find that odd and a little paternalistic. But the actual terms of the housing policies are fairly normal.

Re: Large knife
I don't think it's terribly unusual. I checked UCLA, MIT, and the University of Utah's housing policies and they all forbid weapons including large knives.

Re: Large knife
Is it a kitchen knife or like a hunting knife? We definitely had bread knives and watermelon knives in my apartments that were that long, but if it's only a weapon without a valid culinary use he may be more likely to be reported.

Yes, she's our first. Hedgehogs are very solitary, but they can bond well to their owners and be friendly to people (ours is more of a one-person hedgehog, but I've heard from other owners whose hedgehogs like everyone).

Re: Which rodentish pet is the best?
We have a hedgehog and she's fantastic. We got her from a breeder. The only downside is she was much more expensive than other rodentish animals, and she isn't the best for small children. In a few years when she dies we may get a pair of Guinea pigs.

Re: Rant of the Day
I empathize. My husband is switching jobs starting in a few weeks. The new job is overall much better for his personal development, happiness, and career path. But on the other hand his current job is from home so he's been watching our toddler while he works, so now we have to enroll her in daycare...

He sounds a lot like my husband's biological father. He has skipped the weddings of all three of his married children (two Mormon weddings, two non-religious weddings) with outrageous excuses. He never answers his phone and has gone off the grid completely for months and sometimes years at a time. A...

Re: when someone asks if you're Mormon
That's a good point. I've been pressured to drink, including when I was heavily pregnant. "Oh, research shows one glass of wine a day during pregnancy is fine!" I don't think religion means that we close ourselves off to research or making rational decisions, but sometimes it is just easie...

Re: Answers I liked
I really liked yayfulness's immigration answer. I used to be very much against undocumented immigrants years ago and I'm ashamed of my former attitudes. Learning about the difficulty of immigrating legally and the arbitrary (frankly kind of racist) reasons for our current laws has completely changed...
