Re: Nose Rings
Well, that's because orthodox Jews consider pictures graven images, which the 10 commandments forbid. Cameras are forbidden in the more orthodox parts of Jerusalem as well. But they show pictures of men. Also, from the linked article, in a written statement by Di Tzeitung : "Because of laws of...

Re: Nose Rings
Notions of decency are relative. In the Hasidic Jew community in New York, as shown by the policies of the local Yiddish-language newspaper Di Tzeitung , it's immodest to even show a woman's face, as shown by the recent news story in which the faces of Hillary Clinton and Audrey Tomason were photosh...

Re: Career Advice
Try going to a site like odesk.com and seeing if you can successfully get one person to hire you for a one-off freelance programming job for something. If you can't do that, of course that doesn't mean you couldn't get a real job in software, but it's a low-level practice in being given an assignmen...

Re: BYU pauper babies
I have definitely seen people who had babies they could not care for, and probably should not have had. However, I have also seen many people who think they can't afford a child, but probably could if they were willing to sacrifice more. I'm intrigued. At what point is a couple (or individual) at t...

Re: Faith + Science
I think there are two types of outlook: that things are possible until proven impossible, and that things are impossible until proven possible. The people subscribing to the former can be correct at the moment they say "we just may discover a new law of physics that will show it possible" ...

Re: Faith + Science
Statistics on things like beliefs one holds in one's head that are self-reported on classifications that are not objectively defined (who is/isn't a scientist? how could you possibly prove to someone who believes they are a scientist that they aren't (by whose definition?)? ) are problematic.

Re: Eagles
Maybe tracking down and emailing a professor of ornithology whose research includes eagles would yield higher quality results than some webpages. One time I had a question about lizards and I found highly respected biologist Eric Pianka's email and got a reply in like 20 minutes.

This isn't an actual one (they specifically say as much), but it is offered by Mensa, so it might be better than the average online test for fun.

Random soda machines?
Question 62771 . I asked it and was intrigued by the idea of a soda machine with a "Do you feel lucky" button. I've never seen anything like that, have never headed for a soda machine without knowing what I wanted (or having a pretty good idea...I've probably changed my mind on the spot b...

I thought this was funny:
Catch-and-release, that's like running down pedestrians in your car and then, when they get up and limp away, saying -- Off you go! That's fine. I just wanted to see if I could hit you. -Ellen DeGeneres

Something interesting from the Wikipedia article on negotiation : “Just make them wait.” Everyone else in the world knows that no negotiation tactic is more useful with Americans, because no one places more value on time, no one has less patience when things slow down, and no one looks at their wris...

So if you were one of the hundreds of thousands of followers that a big important person in your industry has, who gets comments on their tweets by the thousands, who is of course not a follower of you (or, if they are, it's a perfunctory reaction to you following them and they don't really stop to ...

I don't think Andrew Jackson faced charges when he killed Charles Dicknson in a duel for insulting his wife. It's impressive though that he let Dickinson shoot him first, knowing that Dicknson was a good shot. Jackson killed Dickinson with Dickinson's bullet in his chest a few inches from his heart,...

Time Travel Banned in China
http://business.blogs.cnn.com/2011/04/1 ... on/?hpt=C2
Ha ha. Watch out, Marty McFly.“The government says … TV dramas shouldn’t have characters that travel back in time and rewrite history. They say this goes against Chinese heritage,” reports CNN’s Eunice Yoon.
