Female Sunday School Presidents

http://theboard.byu.edu/questions/87516/#comments

I liked the comment much better than the original answer, which had too much speculation for my taste. I feel like "we don't know" is an acceptable answer, and it is a quirk of Mormon culture to have to have an answer to everything.

Re: Apocrypha vs Canon

The Church's narrative about the gold plates needs to change, but I see very little incentive for it to change overnight. I'd say that the vast, vast, vast majority of members don't care one bit about seer stones and hats and folk magic. To change the narrative on them would be disrupting to people ...

Re: conservative people, who will you vote for?

I'm more conservative than most of you.

I'm voting for Hillary.

My ideal candidate would be, ironically, Tim Kaine. Hopefully he can run for the Corner Office Without Corners in four or eight years.

Re: Apocrypha vs Canon

I totally agree with all of this. +1000

I like Lowell Bennion's approach to the scriptures. If you've got an extra penny (plus $3.99 in shipping), you will probably like his book on scripture study a lot.

I used to have a reserved parking place at Phoenix City Hall. It was a really coveted space too.

Re: Rant of the Day

Yeah, landlord maintenance is the worst thing in the world. But in my experience renting two separate places, they just show up and let themselves in. One of my landlords even left all my lights on, the windows open, and the doors unlocked. All I got was a "oh, I'll tell the guys to be more car...

Mixed Families

http://theboard.byu.edu/questions/87398/ I've never had to consider what living in a mixed family would be like, so I really appreciated the honest and open answers from all the writers. It sounds like it could be really hard, but also could turn out to be very pleasant. Is there anybody here who wo...

Re: quarter-life crisis: to PhD or not to PhD?

I'd take the job too. Unless you 1) Are set on academia and have full funding, or 2) are getting a PhD in a hefty STEM topic, I've heard they're not worth it. My cousin recently considered a PhD or EdD and was universally told by everybody around him not to go for it. It might not be as fun, but soo...

Re: Temple Altar Cloths

That's fair, but it seemed like such an incomplete answer. "Yeah, I talked to a guy, and I'm not sure that it's accurate, but here you go, this is all the effort you get" on something that was apparently incredibly easy to answer via Google... or even by asking any temple worker in any tem...

Temple Altar Cloths

I guess I don't know why SNB needed to contribute to this answer? Was Zed's not enough? Or why did he need to repeat a small portion of what she said?

A lot of his answers recently have caused me to say okaaaaaaaaay dude, whatever you want.

Re: Causing Trouble at Church

Ugh, I talked to this guy last night at Mutual, I mean FHE, to try to get to know him so maybe I wouldn't dislike him so much. Anyway, that didn't work. It just gave me motive to challenge him publicly.

Re: Causing Trouble at Church

Yesterday in our EQ lesson on temples, we had some doozies. One kid said that the Salt Lake Temple is earthquake-proof because it's sitting on a rock separate from the ground around it. He even "called the Church Office Building" to confirm the rumor (As an aside, I've known enough COB emp...

Re: Missionary health

Yeah...inspiration had its limits, and I've heard of way too many health things being handled poorly to think that it's a good idea to put a guy with no healthcare training in a position to essentially give or withhold access to medical treatment. Fortunately, my mission president was a cardio-thor...

Re: Rant of the Day

Well, if the police had to stop you, that's proof you were up to no good, right? I honestly believe that (when black skin is involved, anyway) that's literally all the justification plenty of people need. Seriously. My parents had the cops called on them once over a neighborhood parking dispute (&q...

You could always chop them off. After all, you can't feel them.

Re: mission timing/revelation, again--87072

I agree with all of this. I once received a very clear revelation to apply for a job I really wanted, and I felt strongly I would get it. I didn't get the job, and I was mad. In hindsight, had I not applied for that job and honed my resume and brushed up on interviewing and all of those things, I wo...

I don't know any lesbians/bi women who fit those stereotypes... Are those still really the stereotypes? I mean, sure they exist, but I didn't know that those were still the stereotypes. They're the stereotypes in my mind? Obviously I acknowledge that stereotypes are inaccurate, but this is what I p...

Re: Rant of the Day

I scored close to 0 on hostile sexism (do people honestly believe those things?), and around the women's average on benevolent. I disliked the quiz, however. For instance, the question "all men deserve a woman to love and cherish" is unfair. OF COURSE all men deserve a woman (or man if tha...
