Re: fear of failure
I answered that same question back in 2015 , and I stand by what I said then. I'm 26, and in terms of perceived excellence I peaked at age 16 with my perfect ACT score. Everything I have done and failed to do since then has been either consciously or subconsciously tainted by the knowledge that it ...

always give a guy one chance
http://theboard.byu.edu/questions/89108/ When I was a writer, I generally subscribed to the theory that if you don't have a good reason to say no to a first date, you should always say yes. The longer I spend away from BYU, the more I realize that that attitude is just plain weird . I know that's pa...

Re: Drink without drinking
My alcohol-loving classmates go out of their way to make sure my wife and I always have something non-alcoholic to drink when we get together EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE REPEATEDLY INSISTED THAT WE ONLY DRINK WATER AND DON'T NEED OTHER BEVERAGES. Grade-school caricatures of peer pressure don't exist in real...

Re: Kissing...with t o n g u e
I understand and respect people who make the personal decision not to kiss with tongue before marriage.
That said, I also suspect that most people who really believe "kissing is simulated sex" have never actually had sex.

Missionary romances
Ze link . I actually had two bishops in a row in my home ward who married someone they served with as a missionary. In the first case, by my understanding, they never really got to know each other while they were still in the field. In the second case, if I remember the story right, they were servi...

Re: Feeling like an adult
I think of "adult" as more of a process than an event. On the one hand, I'm a married man living hundreds of miles away from the nearest family support that isn't my wife, I'm attending graduate school, if you average my age and my wife's age you get 29, I'm taking out student loans and ha...

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
I wanted to stay FB friends with this guy to avoid my "echo chamber" but right now an echo chamber sounds like a pretty nice place to be. Personal opinion: it's not necessary to participate in your friend's paranoid conspiracy echo chamber in order to avoid entering an echo chamber of you...

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
My dream job (affordable housing developer) will basically cease to exist as we know it if Ben Carson decides to gut Housing and Urban Development. From what I've read, his confirmation hearing was uneventful and didn't really provide much in the way of answers about how he'll handle the job. I'll b...

So You Think You Can Dance With The Stars
After reading that question, it was kind of amusing to see the maps in this New York Times article confirm that So You Think You Can Dance is disproportionately popular in Utah. (Other Utah-centric shows: The Vampire Diaries and Once Upon a Time.)

They're also an explicit violation of Facebook's terms of service. I've never reported someone for it, but I've definitely been tempted.Indefinite Integral wrote:Agreed. That's what my wife and I have done. We started giving each other passwords whenever it was more convenient than keeping them a secret.mic0 wrote:I know some of my husband's passwords and he knows some of mine. Re: Apostasy vs Blackmail
I hope it's trolling too, but if my time with the Board has taught me one thing, it is that I should never underestimate how sincerely weird and messed up people can be when the internet gives them anonymity. Not to mention that things like that are HORRIBLE PR for the Church. Every time another sto...

Re: Rant of the Day
Two important things have happened in the past four days: 1. I realized that I would love to spend the rest of my career working with affordable housing, and that I'll probably have that opportunity if I choose to pursue it. 2. Ben Carson got appointed as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. ...

Re: Vote-shaming
I heard Egg McMuffin. That's how my wife and I have referred to him ever since. I got ridiculously sick of hearing about him from his supporters before the election, but now that it's all over and he's still speaking out against Trump's worst tendencies I've gained a bit more appreciation. Not many ...

Those numbers I was running
While proofreading lately, I've noticed the inbox has been rather sparse. I'd been meaning to look into it for a while, and because reasons , today seemed like a good day to get it done. Methodology: I sampled every question divisible by 200, counting backwards from 88400 until I reached 40000 (I co...
