Re: Give me the skinny on the schools

I can't help too much with Utah county schools, but if you are thinking about coming up to the south end of the Salt Lake Valley, let me know, I've got a few connections. Oh, except for Lone Peak works really well with the BYU Math Education department, and both Lone Peak and Timponogos have nice ne...

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10

Maybe it is. I've never heard of it being done the other way, but I've only been involved with public schools. At my high school students can request a certain set of classes, which the counselors do a fairly good job of accommodating, but they don't have any say in which teacher or section they ge...

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10

And I.I, I love unsolicited advice on stuff like this! Thanks. You're welcome! One more piece of unsolicited advice, if there is a specific student that is really causing trouble you should document whenever you have issues with him/her - write down the day and what happened. That way if you have t...

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10

Time for a teaching whine! I've got one class period that is trying to kill me. 1/3 showoffs, 1/3 enablers, and the last 1/3 just wait the period out. About half the time when I ask students to knock something off and do some work, they wait until my back is turned to get right back to what they we...

LOL, I don't think there is a universe where this would happen for me.

Re: flirting

I just under-analyze everything when it comes to flirting. It's worked out fairly well for me so far, when coupled with restricting myself to at most mild interest when there are guys who pay attention to me before their intentions become obvious.

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10

How can you teach kids properly without letting them think? And herein lies the rub in humanities education. We fear indoctrination of a particular mindset, so we try and sanitize our pedagogies to avoid possibly upsetting or controversial material, and in so doing neuter the context that makes the...

Oh, also, please enjoy this excerpt from the sub manual. "Controversial issues are not intended to be part of the regular school curriculum. Controversial issues include religion, race, politics and gender. DO NOT DISCUSS. " Uh, pretty sure with those three books, I cover all the controve...

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10

Today is the day I most likely would have been giving my homecoming talk had I not come home early. Lots of stuff running through my mind today. That sounds like a tricky set of emotions to deal with. I hope your day went well. Thanks, it was up and down, but I did get to go to my MTC companion's h...

Are we ever going to change the title bar again, or is it going to be quoting Mico forever? (Not that I dislike her quote, I'm just wondering)

I've heard that late January/early February is supposed to be one of the worst times for depression ... certainly seems true around here, huh? I honestly don't know how I'm going to get up and go to work tomorrow. I'm sorry y'all are going through this, too. January/February have been bad for me to...

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10

So, I read a book earlier this month where the name of one of the main characters was Damian, and for some reason that name really bothered me, like I had a bad impression of it. I couldn't figure out why. Then I remembered this and this.

Re: What's for dinner?

So, if you want another idea, I came up with one last night. Pizza! I love putting shredded chicken on pizza. You can make chicken alfredo pizza (either homemade or bottled alfredo sauce, chicken, seasoned salt, maybe some chili powder, whatever else you want) or barbecue chicken pizza. Mmmm....

Re: Duelling/Fencing Culture

I think it's a fun idea, but I say limit it to a period or two. I know my kids would use it as an excuse to sidetrack the lesson. This is true, maybe you could require them to defend their position in addition to dueling and those who do not have legitimate defenses will be banned from future duels...

I had this idea of allowing students to challenge each other to "duels" any time they disagree with a classmate's answer--I have a couple of giant fly swatters from the dollar store--but so far most people I've mentioned this to think that allowing high schoolers to hit or poke at each ot...

Re: Stuff we're reading / watching / listening to

Digit thanks for bringing that story up! I had to read Harrison Bergeron in school, possibly in elementary? I don't remember exactly, but I was young enough that I found it pretty disturbing. It would be interesting to read it again as an adult. I've mentioned before that I'm a book blogger and I h...
