Re: BQ 81245 Religious Rights of Business Owners

I brought that up to point out how it appears he sides on the far side of christianity. Like I said before, if he didn't want to do the job he should have just said he was unable to do the cake that day and point them towards other bakers he thinks are good too. To paraphrase what Yayfulness said, ...

Re: BQ 81245 Religious Rights of Business Owners

If a baker refuses to make Halloween or bachelor cakes for anyone, that is ok. If a baker refuses to make Halloween or bachelor party cakes for specific groups of people, let's say Mormons, for example, that is not ok. Jack Phillips does not discriminate on the basis of who or what the customer is....

Re: BQ 81245 Religious Rights of Business Owners

In summary Charlie Craig and David Mullins were told by Mr. Phillips that he would bake them a cake for another occasion, but he refused to create a wedding cake for their same-sex marriage. The message immediately received by Craig and Mullins in this refusal was that, in the eyes of Mr. Phillips, ...

Re: BQ 81245 Religious Rights of Business Owners

unrelated to the direction the discussion is going, but... I just want to know why Charlie and David would want someone who disagrees with their wedding to make their cake? I personally, would not want any disagreement with my nuptials to touch any part of my wedding. I don't think the purpose of t...

Re: BQ 81245 Religious Rights of Business Owners

Yayfulness: I agree with you. My point, which I now regret trying to make in the way I did, was that getting a cake from this bakery was not the real issue. They had ways to get a wedding cake from this particular bakery but only if they disguised their purpose. This they were not willing to do, and...

Re: BQ 81245 Religious Rights of Business Owners

And, since you asked, I suspect that the couple in question refused to do business with Mr. Phillips because they interpreted his statement as meaning that he would not be willing to create a cake for the purpose that they wanted. If he meant something else, maybe he should have clarified it, becau...

Re: BQ 81245 Religious Rights of Business Owners

The following facts are undisputed: ... 6. Phillips informed Complainants that he does not create wedding cakes for same-sex weddings. Phillips told the men, “I’ll make you birthday cakes, shower cakes, sell you cookies and brownies, I just don’t make cakes for same-sex weddings.” 7. Complainants i...

I'm pretty sure the Industrial Age had already started.

I think I was 61 when I first started reading the Board, but I had heard about it a few years earlier.

Re: BQ 81245 Religious Rights of Business Owners

Just a cake? The owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop, Inc., Jack C. Phillips, kindly offered to bake and decorate a cake for Charlie Craig and David Mullins. He made no stipulation as to how the cake would be decorated. On what grounds did the complainants Charlie Craig and David Mullins refuse to do bus...

Hey S.A.M. Good to hear from you. You post too infrequently. How is Alaska? Thanks for posting the article and links. I wonder if you would do me the favor of checking on a couple of things. Apparently Administrative Judge Robert N. Spencer is the person who gave the quote. He makes a distinction be...

Re: Charlie Hebdo attacks and religion

Well, I’m glad I asked for the best so I don’t have to waste my time on more junk science. Eh, I'd say there's a huge difference between "the best studies" and "the best studies that I can come up with off the top of my head." That's okay, yayfulness. You tried. It is really har...

  http://davidwees.com/sites/default/files/educational_research_0.png That's very good, Digit. There is a lot of truth in the chart. Many of us do act that way. Many others don't actually read the research in the first place. We just rely on the scientific consensus, our personal biases, ...

Re: Charlie Hebdo attacks and religion

Full disclosure: I'm not following this thread at all. I did find a quote that is relevant to the discussion that was (is?) going on about who to trust as an unbiased source. It is from this article about who people consider "experts" : This analysis could lead to a position of radical su...

Re: So I'm trying to hire people

I have fond memories as a child of summer days in Heber City. The area is beautiful, the people are wonderful. I spent some time "helping" on horseback driving in the cows for milking.

I hope you get some nice people to help you in this worthy cause, Black Sheep.

Re: BQ 81245 Religious Rights of Business Owners

On the other hand, how far should the law go to force a cake maker to make special cakes for people? What if he doesn't want to decorate a cake with Confederate flags, which he associates with slavery? Or cakes with burning crosses, which he associates with the KKK? Or cakes with Swastikas, which he...

Re: BQ 81245 Religious Rights of Business Owners

In my opinion just because we believe something is not moral doesn't give us a Constitutional right to pass a law trying to enforce one's sense of morality. Laws should not be based on perceived animus, or what a person believes or thinks, but on actions which deny the Constitutional rights (not the...

Honestly? No, I don't think you could convince me that these studies are wrong. But that's because I'm a social science PhD who teaches and researches these kinds of topics and conducts experiments regularly, and my six years of methods training has led me to believe that properly-conducted experim...
