Re: The announcement

Guys, it's awesome to have supportive fans. I just wanted to say thanks. As you can imagine, this has been a stressful time. It's nice to know that people really want us around, to the extent of being willing to support us financially. Hopefully, that won't be necessary. But it's nice to know.

Re: The announcement

It should be noted that we're not being turned down because of requiring so much maintenance. Honestly, once we get up and running, our sponsors generally don't have to do anything. The main problem we've had is that departments are wary of having liability for something that we say.

Re: The announcement

The board needs someplace to run a virtual server, and department willing to request that http://theboard.byu.edu point to that server. We need to have root access on that virtual server.

That's it.

Board fixed for Safari in iOS 5

I'm sure there are a few of you who will appreciate this.

Ever since iOS 5 came out, if you visited the Board on your iPhone or iPad, the blue sidebar got in the way as soon as you tried to zoom in. It was really annoying.

That has now been fixed. You may now continue to enjoy the Board.

Re: Apple's digital textbook initiative

For those who are interested, the EULA on iBooks Author was updated today, and clarifies that it only applies to the actual .ibooks files generated from the app. Apple doesn't claim ownership of the content, and you can still sell PDFs generated from the app, etc. Anyway, I know it got discussed, so...

Re: Apple's digital textbook initiative

For Katya's sake, though, I do agree that archival of digital works is a huge unsolved problem. If anyone has a brilliant idea for how to solve that problem, I suspect you could make a ton of money.

Re: Apple's digital textbook initiative

Wow. I'm late to this game, apparently. I won't bother trying to reply to every point made along the way, but I'll respond to what I see as the most important ones. Overall thoughts Apple's making a big play for the education space here. The tools they've introduced let you make content that's far m...

Re: Conference

He did. The video's already up on lds.org, if you'd like to watch it. Fair warning, though, it was perhaps the least Relief-Society-esque talk of conference so far. (By which I refer to an observation DL and I have made: When speaking to the Relief Society, general authorities tend to praise the wom...

Or we could go with specific types of dragons... Hungarian Horntailed Baby, Chinese Fireball Baby, Common Welsh Green Baby (um... okay?), etc.

Re: New Name for Dragon Baby

Maybe we could go with other mythical creatures? Maybe with a Harry Potter theme? So: Dragon Baby, Centaur Baby, Mandrake Baby (for a particularly colicky one), etc.

Another example from the NPR article: This patent covers an idea called a "contextualizer", and can apparently be used to sue anyone who has a website where, when you scroll your mouse over certain sections, pop-up boxes appear.

Patents and the tech industry

I'm branching this off of something over in the Random Chatter forum , because I feel like I need a soapbox. I'm no patent lawyer, but this just seems too general to be considerable as novel and non-obvious. With the description "Electronic Device" and claim "We claim the ornamental d...

Re: #63798 - Picky eaters

But the problem you are describing is categorically different than that of a picky eater. I suppose a definition of terms is in order; to me, the term "picky eater" refers to someone who claims not to like many foods because of an aversion based on certain environmental factors, as well a...
