Re: What's for dinner?
To be fair, I usually follow whatever recipe I have. Or in that case, I'd buy whatever you ask. Since I can't tell the difference, but I know others can, I want it to be right. I'm not a very confident cook unless it's a recipe I make often. And then it's usually that I'm confident simply because I ...

Cars with high smog ratings
We're selling Yellow's old, very run down car to a mechanic who needs a car and can fix it up. We'll probably stay a one-car family for awhile (it's not very hard when he works from home) but we've been toying with the idea of buying an electric or hybrid car to do our part to help with the inversio...

Re: What's for dinner?
I use it for both soups and other things. I'm not about to have two different kinds of broth, depending on what I cook. I was curious if you used the broth AS a soup. I still maintain that putting it IN something there is no difference, flavor-wise. Even soup. I do it more for health and self-relia...

Re: What's for dinner?
I hate keyboard shortcuts right now. I've hit something twice now that opens a new site and I lose what I wrote. So, blah, blah, health, control, knowledge. Also, it's not that time or money intensive. I spent maybe $10 and got 13 pints of broth and a huge bowl of shredded chicken. Forget about the ...

I don't do it for cost. I do it to control what goes in. And for the insane health properties of broth.Marduk wrote:Portia, I don't really care for pupusas that much. I'd much rather eat tamales.
DL, out of curiosity, why do you can your own broth? It doesn't seem worth it, cost wise, to me.

Re: What's for dinner?
Last time I got a whole raw chicken from the grocery store, it was SUCH A PAIN to actually take the chicken apart. Is it easier to dismember if it is slow-cooked? How did you slow-cook it? I boiled mine. I want to try again, because the chicken was very tasty and less expensive per pound. Just wond...

Re: What's for dinner?
We eat lots of tacos, enchiladas, and burritos. And quesadillas. I'm kind of sick of them. (We also buy the cook-at-home tortillas. In bulk at CostCo.) Look, you can have familiar foods and get sick of them, or try something new and not be sick of it. I'm not sure if you can have it both ways? I wa...

Re: Word of the Day
That is a great resource! (And for those wondering, the "Elo-[phlegm]" (I really don't know how to phonetically spell the guttural ch sound. But Achmed the dead terrorist taught me you just say phlegm.) is the singular word. Elohim is the plural.) And thank you for showing me that I'm not ...

I never said I wouldn't like it. I never said that ethnic foods that are similar to ones I like would be gross. I said, " scary = generally ethnic food I've never before had. I've never had pupusas, or whatever it was you suggested that is now on another page. Thus it is currently too scary to ...

Re: Word of the Day
"Elohim" is the only spelling mentioned on the Wikipedia page . And good call, Yarjka, on the Urim and Thummim being an ancient idea. They were pretty much an ancient Magic 8 Ball. I'm actually surprised that Dragon Lady didn't know the origin. [shrug] I'm not perfect and don't know all t...

Re: What's for dinner?
Pupusas are just corn tortillas, meat, and cheese, fried up. Is that seriously too "adventurous"? I don't love corn tortillas. So... yes. Also, I don't know what you mean by "fried up". Like... do I roll them up and fry them in oil in a frying pan? Do I cut it all up and stir it...

Re: Word of the Day
You're right on Urim and Thumim. I use a short i for both. And it sounds weird to not. The more I think about it, the more I realize it's just Eloheim that bothers me. Perhaps because it's the name of God? (Well, technically, gods. But whatever.) And maybe it's just because I went through the temple...

(= generally ethnic food I've never before had) I think this is exactly what you should do with the chicken. Pupusas! Curry! Mix it with plantains! Pad Thai! Yum. ... annnnd nixed. I was a very picky eater as a child. I convinced myself to not be a picky eater. I will eat what other people serve me...
