Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
That's rough. Taking over for another teacher so close to the end of the year...the kids are bound to be knuckleheads about it, and it sounds like you have a particularly knuckleheaded group right there. It sounds like at this school, the kids can sign up by teacher and period, so it's easy to get ...

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
Time for a teaching whine! I've got one class period that is trying to kill me. 1/3 showoffs, 1/3 enablers, and the last 1/3 just wait the period out. About half the time when I ask students to knock something off and do some work, they wait until my back is turned to get right back to what they wer...

Re: Ordain Women
This just isn't worth engaging for me anymore. Didn't you come to that conclusion quite a while ago, Portia? It seems like every week or so you bring up another church issue you're dissatisfied with, and then swear that you're done forever now. Which is fine, and I know that the church is still par...

Re: Were women illiterate in the Bible and Book of Mormon?
They're known to God, but I think his point is they're not known to US as well, because the writers of the BoM didn't give us too much information. Sometimes that annoys me, sometimes it doesn't.

Just read and then watched Cry, the Beloved Country. I'm glad I did both. But I have a hard time seeing James Earl Jones as South African.

Now you just sound like Ned Ryerson.
Also, I will miss you too, and we'd better still be friends.

Re: Therapy is dumb.
So...I don't have any major mental illnesses. Just minor depressive episodes (at least once a month linked to hormones and headaches, plus some other times if the right circumstances come together). I cognitively realize that I don't have to be "bad enough" for therapy, and I realize that...

Oh, also, please enjoy this excerpt from the sub manual. "Controversial issues are not intended to be part of the regular school curriculum. Controversial issues include religion, race, politics and gender. DO NOT DISCUSS. " Uh, pretty sure with those three books, I cover all the controver...

Looks like I'm going to be teaching Speak again! New things since the last time: Steubenville. Maybe I can work it in, somehow. Also I just saw this, but it might be a bit much for the kids. Also they probably don't love Indian movie stars like I do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hC0Ng_ajpY Also ...

Re: 26 year old comparing herself to 20 year olds
don't think she's saying that her husband doesn't trust her. She's just saying that their difference puts her and her husband in a situation where 20-year old women are the norm, which makes her the odd woman out, which makes her feel self-conscious. I think it's fairly natural, though obviously not...

Re: Happy Days in Random Chatter 10
One of the girls I subbed for in my last longterm job died this morning. Turns out she was fighting cancer, but didn't want to tell anyone, so neither I, nor the regular teacher, nor other children knew. Dang. And she was so friendly and smart and just 15, and I know cancer is no respecter of person...

Re: What's for dinner?
I've decided maybe I should try all those things in my Pinterest food boards instead of just accumulating more. So I picked out 5 for the next week or two and got all but the most exotic ingredients. Tomorrow (or the next day) I hit up the Asian market (that one on Freedom is magical!) and get the r...

Re: New laptop
Uh, I got an Acer Aspire a few years back. I just had to replace the battery, but other than that I've liked it. It's good for writing documents and watching Netflix and playing a few not-too-visually-intense games. I like it. Except that the audio port recently stopped working. At least the laptop ...

My institute teacher has been telling us about Matthew including those women in Christ's lineage and why. Rad awesome. I don't love or trust everything he says (though I'm sure he knows a lot more than me, seeing as how he wrote Believing Christ), but those old stories make a lot more sense to me no...

I may will take you both up on that, thanks! I've never actually done a cover letter before, and it's a general one I just upload to the district website, so I can't get all specific about the positions I want.

Re: Stuff we're reading / watching / listening to
I finished season three of Sherlock. That last episode was such a rollercoaster of emotion. Yep. At first I thought they were trying to reset the story in some stupid ways, but they didn't take the easy way out (and in fact even laid the foundation for the plot twists pretty well, in hindsi...

Re: Stuff we're reading / watching / listening to
Watched Great Gatsby. I thought the narration was a little clunky and the CGI a little off-putting, but I loved the parties and characters and the way it sucked you into the drama and opulence and excitement of it--made it relatable and understandable instead of boring and stupidly preventable. (Wel...

Yeah, they were such caricatures that my score took a few hits early on. I thought I was supposed to be looking for the real emotion underneath the obvious fake one.
