Making me feel inadequate by comparison.
So. Someone from BYU called me today to ask me to contribute to scholarships and such. I think she was trying to find specific scholarships that I might have a personal connection to so I would feel more obligated to give. She asked what I had studied, and when I said "history," she assume...

Re: Wheel of Time
I say binge. I go crazy trying to hold myself back when it comes to books (hence why I don't touch Harry Potter until Christmas). Wait... I don't understand. Those only take about 16 hours of straight reading for the longest of them. Nothing you can't knock out on any given Saturday, with enough mo...

Re: Help!
It creates problems when each person wants to continue living according to their own culture. It affects everything from what foods you eat on a daily basis, how you decorate the house, what traditions you will continue, how to celebrate holidays, what language your kids will speak, how you interac...

Re: Gambling
You ask where the flaw in your argument is, and I agree with Tao that it is in your assumptions about why the Church is anti-gambling. The common argument against gambling is something along the lines that gambling produces nothing of value. Another argument against gambling is that it is addictive ...

Guys. I am so excited about budgeting. I have no idea how my projections are going to hold up, but it is exciting to actually make decisions about where my money is going. In college, my budget was basically 10% tithing 15% food 35% rent 40% school/tuition I felt guilty for every haircut or trip to ...

Re: Nine for Random Chatter, doomed to die
We just bought two simple right-angle brackets, and four screws for each bookcase. We screwed the bracket to the top of the bookcase, and to the wall. Seriously. That's all it takes. Just head over to the local ACE or probably even WalMart. My sister has a bookcase that is mostly fine, but if you o...

My parents: Currently live much closer to female's parents. This changed a lot over the course of the marriage, though, as the male's job required frequent relocation. Live more than 100 miles from both female and male's parents. My eldest sister: Currently live within 100 miles of female's parents....

Are you sure it wasn't dodge ball? My freshman year, the RA of the guys' dorm sponsored a dodge ball tournament indoors. I'm not sure it was sanctioned by the higher-ups, though.thebigcheese wrote:The boys who would play soccer indoors. Ugh.

Re: Vorpal's Birthday
We always DO have a family dinner, and this we do on Sundays when everyone comes over anyways. This is how we do it for everyone in the family, including cousins, aunts and uncles, and parents. They request a favorite meal, we make sure they are mentioned in the dinner prayer, and we do a cake and ...

Re: Education in America
My dad's birthday is one week later, so from the kid's perspective they reinforce each other. My mom's birthday is right around Mother's Day, and then my parent's anniversary is a few days after that. A week after THAT is my dad's birthday, and a few weeks later we have Father's Day. So it's not li...

I don't think you need to memorize every grammar rule in the book to be a good writer. You should have a basic understanding of good grammar, but you need not be an expert. Mostly, I think good writing is something captivating, interesting. Learning to write well is basically just learning how to c...

i know my school is returning to diagramming sentences because the kids all write in text form instead of real sentences. Hee! A part of me feels bad for them, because diagramming is super hard (at least for me). But the other part figures it might actually do them some good, so they can just deal ...

This is a little bit random, but once upon a time at a Board party, we were playing My Uncle Mufasa which goes as follows: you pick a well known film and then tell the story as if the plot actually happened to you; and other players try to pick up on what movie you are describing and as time goes on...
