Re: Who of all These Parties are Right?

Hm. I will contemplate coming but I make no promises. Saturdays and Sundays also work for me, along with Wednesdays. Thursdays are strictly out.

Re: Nine for Random Chatter, doomed to die

Ha! Good suggestion, Emiliana! I actually just got a lot of solace out of a three-hour choir rehearsal. Also, men, please make sure that you clarify when you are asking someone out on a date. The guy in question apparently thought he had asked me out several time. But I do not remember a single (no ...

Re: Nine for Random Chatter, doomed to die

Um, so, craziest night of my year so far- I just had a kind-of DTR and kind of got dumped, but I wasn't actually dating anybody . . .but I still cried. Ayah. And now I can't sleep.

Re: Cochlear Implants, Deaf Culture, Etc.

I don't know about that specific test, but it should be accomplishable with a simple PCR test, which shouldn't be very expensive. But I have no idea how much overhead they'd tack on for having a genetic counselor interpret the results.

Guys, I've been swimming again. It may be time to accept that I'll always smell like chlorine, no matter how much I scrub down.

Re: Nine for Random Chatter, doomed to die

Also, it doesn't really contribute to the conversation, but this conversation is reminding me of one of my best friends growing up. We all knew she had speech impediments and seemed just a little cognitively impaired, but it wasn't until she was fourteen or so that she had tests that showed she had ...

Wait- you mean we shouldn't be giving newborns chunks of meat and tossing them outside to learn about their world? How else are they supposed to toughen up?

He has been known to go sit in the cockpit when he's taking the private jet that John Huntsman, Sr. donated for the use of the leadership of the church. I went to a fireside given by the pilot of that plane- apparently his co-pilot was freaking out a little to have a member of the First Presidency c...

Re: Conference

I was involved in Conference today- I ended up talking to my cousin until 12:30 AM last night and then I had to be in the Conference Center by quarter to 7 this morning. It's been a long day. A lot of people put in a lot of time so we can have General Conference.

Re: Nine for Random Chatter, doomed to die

Augh. Monday- got up, went to work, went straight to FHE, got home at 9:30, got convinced to go hot tubbing, home for good at 11 PM Tuesday- got up, went to work, went straight to swim class, went straight to rehearsal, went straight to farewell party for friend, got home for good at 11:30 PM. It's ...

Re: Nine for Random Chatter, doomed to die

So, if I'm poking around on a dating website and I get a message from someone who sounds very interested in getting to know me better but I'm lukewarm about (based solely off of a profile, but still), so I respond just to see and he writes back and sounds super excited but I'm feeling hard pressed t...

Re: Stuff we're reading / watching / listening to

Does she hold it over you, Yarkja? And Rifka, I admit I have not read a good chunk of this thread. I've read a lot of Robin McKinley's books and I loved the Hero and the Crown and The Blue Sword. Her short stories aren't as compelling to me, like the compilation A Knot in the Grain. And I don't know...

Re: Stuff we're reading / watching / listening to

I'm rereading Beauty by Robin McKinley. She is a fabulous fantasy writer- I read her books first in late elementary school/junior high, so they are accessible for young teen readers but well enough done that they are still very enjoyable. And I don't say that about every book I used to love. I adore...

Re: Bowties

My grandpa was famous for his bowties. He made them himself and he had a few hundred. And he was a professor. But he was bald for as long as I knew him, so no long, unkempt hair. Actually, I have a few of his bowties now (we all got a few as a sort of inheritance) and I wear them in my hair every so...

Heheh. Tao, it's all too true that many scientists fall prey to wanting to make the data fit the hypothesis. I've been guilty of the feeling myself, although I don't think I've succumbed to it yet. And Hypatia, I do agree about the general distinction between science and pseudo-science (or,a s Tao a...

As someone who has studied evolution and is scientifically trained and all that good stuff, I want to put in a few cents. First, Rifka, very good point about the original word used for "day" in the Bible. If you think about the wording in the endowment session during the creation of the ea...

Heh. Rifka and Marduk, at the lab where I work there's one division called "Parasitology and Fecal Testing." Every time I walk by the door I give thanks that I do not work in there. One time in our company newsletter, in the marriage announcements, they had an announcement that two lab tec...
