Re: Kids' books about Jesus
I had this version of the Children's Illustrated Bible . I cherished it when I was a kid. So many cool photos and explanations of the background and stuff! I checked the table of contents to refresh my memory and they do spend quite a bit of time talking about specific events in Jesus' life and indi...

Re: Something is wrong on teh interwebs!
I for one thought you explained your views calmly and rationally. Why do you feel weird about it?

Re: Sexual content vs. violence
The difference for me is that I find overly sexual content in media merely distasteful, whereas violence is actually disturbing and distressing. I think that's because sex and occasional nudity are normal but private parts of life. I generally prefer not to see other people involved in those things,...

Oh, haha, I'm dumb. I forgot about the paschal lamb thing because it's not really a part of modern Seders anymore.

Re: Easter lamb
Haha. Ham does make more sense there. Although, when you think about it, it's not really any less strange to eat the animal that Jesus chose to symbolize himself for Easter dinner. Which is why we're making quiche instead!

Re: #66407 -- Temple
Aww, sad! I've never even seen the blonde one. I was hoping it was only being phased out at certain temples, but it doesn't sound like my odds of ever seeing it (through non-sketch means, anyway) are very good. Bummer.

Re: So...the Big Bang, huh?
Hah...I thought that was such a weird thing to say in Conference. Hopefully that gets edited before publication to sound more like an affirmation of God's control over the universe and less like an old-fashioned attack on a particular scientific theory. I also liked how when Elder Christofferson spo...

Re: Down for a few hours
Haha, I actually had no idea that LJ was the sole supporter of the Board Board until I read this...$27 a year isn't especially expensive, so please, nobody feel obligated to do anything, but it sounded like a few of you wanted to help out. If you'd like to, but LJ is too nice to take your money, PM ...

Re: House Plants
I have a "Janet Craig" that I bought five years ago and it's still kickin', despite me only watering it about once a month, keeping it in rooms where I may or may not actually bother opening the blinds to let real sunlight in, getting wrapped in a plastic bag and stashed in the trunk of a ...

Re: Answers I liked
When we first moved to our married ward, I had a few awkward experiences where I would ask a sister if she worked or went to school, and she would say, "No, I just stay at home with my daughter..." and I was worried that I was inadvertently offending people or implying that they should be ...

Re: #66453 - Public scripture study
Hmm, especially on campus, if I think twice about what someone else is reading, I generally assume they're studying for a class or killing a little free time, not showing off (probably because those are the only times I'd ever read in public). It seems like a lot of work to lug around a book you're ...

Yeah, Niffler Baby's birth sounded pretty much ideal! It was very cool to read about it. So glad it all went well!

Re: Feminism, Defined
As to your first point, Eirene, it really doesn't matter to me how someone decides to help, my issue is with the claim that feminism is about bringing equality to everyone, when really it ought to be said that it is interested in bringing equality to WOMEN (and to a lesser extent, concerned about L...

Re: Feminism, Defined
Maybe this is just me, but I have to say, one of my very very favorite things about leaving Utah is that at least in my school and professional life out here, people just treat me like a person. Not like a woman. It's so different from BYU, and in ways that I'm not sure I would have been aware of wh...

Re: Feminism, Defined
Here's one group blog (language warning) that's run by feminists (mostly women, I believe), that focuses pretty much exclusively on gender issues that impact men negatively. I've also read several recent articles on Jezebel (a women's interests news blog) about educational/workforce gaps between men...

Re: Feminism, Defined
Marduk, I'm curious: do you have any broad issues in mind where "we are not treating or valuing males equally?" Or are you thinking about specific occurrences when a man was treated unfairly because of his gender? I have some thoughts (and links) but I'm interested in knowing what you perc...

Re: Ear owie
I can never resist the medical questions. :) Obviously without seeing anything, I don't know enough to make an actual diagnosis, but I have some thoughts. Different areas of skin on the body will actually have their own unique microfloral (or bacterial/fungal) colonizations. That's one reason why, f...

Re: Congrats to LJ and Eirene!
Oh, DL, that is EXACTLY how animals should be raised! I think I might always be kind of squicked out about the idea of eating an animal, but I have absolutely no moral objections to giving livestock healthy, happy lives and when their time is over, quick, humane deaths. If all the meat in the world ...

Re: Congrats to LJ and Eirene!
I know LJ wasn't that big of a meat eater even before we met, which made things a lot easier when we started cooking dinner together and everything. But no, I would never force him not to eat something or intentionally pressure him to avoid something. He's a grown man and I respect his decisions eve...
