Songs for a Halloween mix?

Post by ahem. »

Any suggestions for a Halloween road trip mix? I'm not really looking for novelty songs, but anything that is either dark and dreary in tone, or has some sort of Halloween topic involved could be fun. Here's what I have dumped into a folder for consideration so far (in no particular order):

[*]In the Dark of the Night - Anastasia soundtrack
[*]Hurt - Johnny Cash
[*]They Are Night Zombies!! They Are Neighbors!! They Have Come Back... - Sufjan Stevens
[*]Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
[*]Werewolf Bar Mitzvah - Tracy Jordan
[*]Ghost - Neutral Milk Hotel
[*]Vampire - Antsy Pants
[*]Terrible Angels - Coco Rosie
[*]I Will Follow You Into the Dark - Death Cab for Cutie
[*]Mack the Knife - Boddy Darin
[*]Mad World - Gary Jules
[*]Devil Town - Tony Lucca
[*]Girl in the Tower - Benji Hughes
[*]Something from the Killers?
[*]Something from the Decemberists?

Is this for a Halloween theme? I thought Halloween was supposed to be..... uh, scary and stuff. This list is just basically depressed people music.

Hmph. Yes, many on my playlist so far are just dreary. But there are some about vampires, devils, ghosts, "terrible angels," werewolfs, and zombies... how are those not Halloween-y?

Anyway, that was mostly me just going through my itunes and finding things that seemed vaguely spooky/eerie/relating to dark creatures/etc.

Don't judge me. *pout*

Oh. At first I thought you said novelty songs were okay, then I reread it. I'm going to keep my list anyway, for any who wishes to glean from it.

Ghostbusters
Monster Mash
Purple People Eater
Grim Grinning Ghosts
Thriller
Anything from The Nightmare Before Christmas
Adam's Family
Witch Doctor
Have You Seen the Ghost of John?
One Good Scare Ought to Do You Some Good
Phantom of the Opera
I Heard Someone Crying
Final Storm (from The Secret Garden)
Anything Wizard Rock (I really need to get into this genre some time...)

Don't listen to 'im. He objects to the musical tastes/playlists of most people. Especially me. : )

The Hanging Garden - The Cure
Leif Erikson - Interpol
Atmosphere - Joy Division
Epitaph For My Heart - The Magnetic Fields
Low - R.E.M.
How To Disappear Completely - Radiohead
Half A Person - The Smiths

I have a classical Halloween playlist somewhere. There's a witch's dance by Berlioz from The Damnation of Faust, Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain, and Saint-Saen's Danse Macabre. There's some piano piece called the witch's dance too. Plenty of creepy classical available.

Don't forget Toccata in D minor-- that's practically a staple and I feel ashamed for forgetting to put it on my list. Another good one is Mahler's Symphony No. 1. The Erlking by Schubert is one of my all-time favorites, and pretty creepy, especially when you know what the lyrics mean.
I've also thought of a few more non-classical examples: The Mob Song, Maison de Lunes, Court of Miracles, and Boheimian Rhapsody (I can't think about this last song without thinking about an old Road Show about a witch who kidnaps the princes so she can steal the princesses' hair--good times). The playlist I have now started to compile also includes music from the Nancy Drew computer games, which are primarily spooky via nostalgia.

Okay, here's my repentance for my curt response earlier.

Anything by Oingo Boingo (except their last album, which was just titled Boingo.) Something about their music just screams Halloween and scary, even though it isn't specifically about that per se, and it certainly isn't gloomy and depressing. Try It's a Dead Man's Party or No Spill Blood.

Ha ha. Thanks, Marduk! I started this thread because I was making a road trip mix for last week, but my sister agreed with you and said most of my songs were too depressing. She was leaning more toward the novelty side of things, so Dead Cat's list came in very handy. Here's what I put on it:

* This is Halloween - Marilyn Manson
* Spooky - Classics IV
* Vampire - Antsy Pants
* Creep - Radiohead
* Thriller - Michael Jackson
* Suerstar - Sonic Youth
* Addam's Family - Vic Mizzy
* Shankill Butchers - the Decemberists
* Remains of the Day - Corpse Bride soundtrack
* Mad World - Gary Jules
* Werewolf Bar Mitzvah - Tracy Jordan
* Toccata & Fugue In D Minor - Bach
* Ghostbusters - Ray Parker Jr
* Witch Doctor - David Seville
* The Purple People Eater
* Devil Town - Tony Lucca

I plan on making a more dreary/spooky mix for myself, so I'll be sure to explore some of the other suggestions made. I'll try to remember to post that here too once I get around to making it.

Mwahaha! Yes! I knew my list couldn't be completely useless!

I know the road trip is past and gone, but I found this today and had to share it: a Halloween hymn.
