Ok, just the idea of this is kind of awesome.
Re: #61765 - Paying tithing in stocks
The story (if you're curious) is that she was working as a teacher in Morocco at a time when there were no wards or branches in that country (I don't know if that's still the case), so she couldn't pay her tithing to a local church leader. And she either wasn't allowed to take Moroccan currency out of the country or wasn't allowed to exchange it for dollars or maybe both, so she saved 10% of her income for the year or so that she was there and then, right before she left the country, she went to the gold market and spent it all on gold bracelets. And then she left the country with all the gold bracelets and when she was next visiting Utah, she made an appointment with the appropriate person at Church headquarters and showed up and dumped the gold bracelets on his desk. I imagine he was rather shocked.

I am waiting to hear this story in General Conference. It's a good one.Katya wrote:The story (if you're curious) is that she was working as a teacher in Morocco at a time when there were no wards or branches in that country (I don't know if that's still the case), so she couldn't pay her tithing to a local church leader. Well, the woman in question used to be on the General Relief Society Board, but I think that's as close as it's ever come to General Conference.

It's just like the olden days! Are we still allowed to pay tithing in vegetables, or was that an official policy change?

My father used to pay a part of his tithing in stocks - Marriott's.thebigcheese wrote:It's just like the olden days! Are we still allowed to pay tithing in vegetables, or was that an official policy change?
I don't know if the policy recently changed, but up until last fall this was the policy in paying tithing in kind:
In-Kind Donations, Including Tithing
The Church normally discourages paying tithing in kind. It is preferable for members to dispose
of the property themselves and then pay tithing in cash. However, the payment of tithing in kind
may be accepted in certain cases and may be a common practice in some areas of the world.
The Church accepts (1) stocks, bonds, or other securities that are marketable immediately and
(2) some marketable real estate. Before accepting these contributions, local leaders should
receive approval from the administration office. If members want to contribute any other items,
the bishop should clear it with the stake president. The stake president should contact the
administration office for approval before authorizing the bishop to accept the items.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I keep misreading the title of this thread as "Paying Tithing in Socks."
My response has been the same every time: *shrug* "I've got no problem with it."

Paying tithing in socks is not permissible. Please sell your socks and then give the money to the church instead.

What if the socks are made with solid gold encrusted with diamonds?

I've read it that way so many times, too! Except, I haven't even stopped to think of it as weird. I think I need more sleep.Yarjka wrote:I just wanted to let everyone know that I keep misreading the title of this thread as "Paying Tithing in Socks."

For the record, this is the 10,000 post in this forum; I feel we ought to divert at least 1,000 of our posts to the Church as an in-kind donation.

I think we've spent at least 1 post in 10 talking about the Church—does that count?wired wrote:For the record, this is the 10,000 post in this forum; I feel we ought to divert at least 1,000 of our posts to the Church as an in-kind donation.
