#62130 : ez/es suffixes in Spanish Surnames

Post by Ramoplot »

Question link : 62130

I posted a comment saying so, but I'm pretty sure that the ez suffix in Spanish surnames identifies the surname as meaning 'son of' (Gonzales = son of Gonzalo). Wikipedia seems to agree with me.

That's mostly right, as the Wikipedia article points out, though, sometimes it just happens to be the spelling of that particular name.

Anyone else think that was a long introduction to a simple question? I mean, if I was going to start teaching a classroom of a predominantly different culture than I had previously been accustomed, what a particular suffix on their last name meant would not be one of my first concerns.
